Hello, this is a May 4 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
SANDHILL CRANE
SWALLOW-TAILED KITES
NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS
A SANDHILL CRANE has been seen regularly at the the Greenville, NC sewage
treatment plant. The crane apparently spends the night in the area, since
most sightings at this facility have been around 5:30 - 6:30 PM when the bird
flies in from the surrounding areas. Birders can enter the facility but be
sure to obtain permission to enter when you get there. The treatment plant is
on Old Pactolus Rd just east of Greenville. This crane sometimes can be found
on the fairways of the Bradford Creek Golf Course during the day. Try the
8th, 10th , and 18th holes. Be sure to tell employees what you are doing
there.
SWALLOW-TAILED KITE reports continue to come in from North Carolina where
they are not known to breed. On 4-29 a single kite was seen SE of Lake Ellis
near the Carteret-Craven County line. The bird was flying over Lake Rd. Also
on 4-29, 2 kites were over fields along Hwy. 210 between I-40 and the Cape
Fear River.
NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS have been heard calling at Mt. Mitchell State Park in
NC. Listen around the campground and the maintenance area.
There is still time to make reservations to do some offshore birding in NC
this month. Brian Patteson has room left on trips for May 29 and May 30. Call
Brian at 252-986-1363 for details.
Thanks this week to Brian Patteson, John Fussell, and Kerry Stevens for their
calls and reports. Some of this information was gleaned from carolinabirds.
