Bill Moyers has done a PBS series called Earth on Edge, which gauges the
status of the world's waters, coral reefs, forests, grasslands and
farmlands from the perspectives of five prominent scientists. One of them,
Carl Safina, author of Song for the Blue Ocean, impressed the heck out of
me when he spoke at Audubon's national convention last year. He's now
working on a book about the world's seabirds, many of which are declining
precipitously.
I don't know the other four folk, but I expect they'll be top-notch, too.
They are tropical ecologist Adrian Forsyth, climate change expert and
ecology professor Habiba Gitay, American Museum of Natural History Curator
and Senior Vice President Michael Novacek, and Axelrod Research Curator
Melanie Stiassny.
Probably a series worth checking out.
And did anybody actually see a scissor-tailed flycatcher while watching the
U.S. (Men's) Open near Tulsa, OK, over the weekend. Evidently the golf
course where the tournament occurred uses the flycatcher in its logo.
