I think I mentioned it before, but I have found several dead and dying
greater shearwaters on the beaches of Bogue Banks (Fort Macon to
Emerald Isle) in the height of summer over the last 10 or 12 years. The
total is probably over 15; one summer, my wife and I found 4 over the
course of one week. I also found one (20 years ago) on Topsail Island in
late June. I think John Fussell had some observations like this as well.
