Nature-writing conference (birds!), public invited, Sept. 7-8, Chapel Hill

Here's an announcement of a conference that sounds interesting -- it
features some well-known contemporary writers on birds and nature. The
registration fee is just $10 for the 2-day event, which will be held in
Chapel Hill. (And it'll give us something to do in Sept. if water levels
stay high around here and shorebird migration is a flop!)

What: "Lawson's Legacy: Nature writing and North Carolina, 1701-2001" is
"a conference commemorating the 300th anniversary of John Lawson's
exploration of the Carolinas backcountry and celebrating the strong
tradition of North Carolina nature writing that Lawson began." It is
sponsored by the North Carolina Collection, Wilson Library, UNC-Chapel Hill.

When: Fri.-Sat., Sept 7-8

Where: Wilson Library, UNC at Chapel Hill campus

Presentations, day 1, on: John Lawson; Mark Catesby (painter of birds, by
Alan Feduccia); William Bartram; inspiration and plagiarism in 18th century
natural science writers (by Marcus Simpson); Rachel Carson; and writing the
French Broad (by Wilma Dykeman of Asheville)

Contemporary N.C. writers reading from their works, day 2: Phillip Manning,
Eddie Nickens, Jan DeBlieu, Janet Lembke, David Cecelski, Jim Dean and Bland
Simpson.

There will also be an exhibit in the North Carolina Collection Gallery.
