Rusty Trump says on Humnet today that there are already eight reports
of Rufous Hummingbirds in Georgia this year. Some have gotten banded.
I don't think I've seen any reports of non-ruby-throats yet for the
Carolinas this "fall." Are we too far east, or are people just
keeping secrets? :-)
Although I'm still banding ruby-throats at Hilton Pond Center for
Piedmont Natural History near York, we all should be keeping a close
eye our hummers from now on in the hope that one of those western
vagrants will be wandering through.
I'd be happy to band any vagrants within driving distance, and I
suspect Susan Campbell would say the same from her base in the
Research Triangle.
By all means please report unusual hummers. If you'd rather not make
a public posting, please let me know at hilton@hiltonpond.org or at
(803)684-5852.
Happy Hummingbird Watching,
BILL
