Winter birds at EVERGREEN NATURE PRESERVE in Charlotte

The upper case letters signify celebration. Last week the Mecklenburg County
Commissioners accepted 80 acres of forest/park from the City of Charlotte and
designated them as a Nature Preserve in the Mecklenburg County Park System.
This is a designation we have been working on for two years. Information is
on the website of the Mecklenburg Audubon Society at meckbirds.org

Our first foray into the official Nature Preserve this morning (Saturday
10/13) was a great success. We saw 28 species including two winter species,
a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. We also saw for
only the second time in 4 years a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER. And we were pleased
to see the resident RED-TAILED HAWK and RED-SHOULDERED HAWK on the same day.
Also found the resident BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCHES, which is a regular in the
Evergreen Cemetery. Not bad for an inner city birding site only 4 miles from
downtown Charlotte.
