Raven Rock State Park, 11/3/01

Because I didn't have time to go farther afield, I headed for
Raven Rock State Park this morning, stopping at a couple of ponds and
at the Upper Little River bridge on US 401 prior to arriving at the
park entrance about 7:50 a.m. While I waited for the gate to open I
listened and looked at the woods on both sides. In addition to
chickadees, I heard and then located what appeared to be a winter
wren. However, I could only see about half of it, enough to be
certain that it was a wren but not enough to be positive it was a
winter wren. It was foraging in some brush on the left side of the
road (I was headed in) just outside the gate.
I hiked the Little Creek Trail, took the trail that goes from the
camping area to Raven Rock, then headed for the overlook and
continued home around that loop. I spent some time scanning the
river for hawks and other interesting birds and I got lucky. An
adult bald eagle winged its way upriver, flying down near the water.
That's about the last place I would have thought to see an eagle. It
was the highlight of the day.
