Hello, this is a November 17 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:

BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD
TROPICAL KINGBIRD
WESTERN GREBE
WHITE PELICAN
LONG-EARED OWL
LAPLAND LONGSPUR

An imm. male BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD is coming to a feeder near Greensboro,
NC. Call Monte Tickle at 336-449-4289 to ask to come see this first state
record.

A WESTERN GREBE and WHITE PELICAN are being seen at Falls Lake in NC. Look
for the grebe from the Rolling View State Area. Go to the beach area and
scope the lake from there. Also at Falls Lake, look for a WHITE PELICAN north
of the I-85 bridge over that lake.

The TROPICAL KINGBIRD at Pea Island NWR. was seen today 11-17. Look around
the north dike of South Pond and the small pond east of Hwy. 12.

A LONG-EARED OWL has been seen twice at Alligator River NWR in the early AM.
From US 64 enter the refuge on Milltail Creek Rd and go about .2 miles to the
first patch of trees on the right. Scan the fields in this area for a hunting
owl. The owl has been seen around 6:00 -6:30 AM. The refuge is closed at
night.

LAPLAND LONGSPURS have been reported from both Carolinas. On 11-13 one bird
was present on the jetty at Huntington Beach State Park in SC. It was later
seen in the dunes around the tidal pond there. 3 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were at
Hooper Lane in Henderson County, NC on 11-10. Scan through the pipit flocks
for longspurs. For more information call Wayne Forsythe at 828-697-6628.

Thanks this week to Wayne Forsythe, Jack Peachey, Jeff Lewis for their calls
and reports.
