Hello, this is a December 24 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:

ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER
WESTERN KINGBIRDS
SANDHILL CRANES
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS
EURASIAN WIGEON

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER is being seen at Alligator River NWR in NC. From
US 64 turn onto Milltail Rd at the refuge. Pass the maintenance buildings on
the right and continue to the first left turn (Long Curve Rd.) Take Long
Curve for about 1 mile to Link Rd. Park here and begin looking for the
flycatcher in the patch of woods on the left of Link Rd. or the weeds to the
right. Entry onto Link Rd. is prohibited at this time. This bird has been
seen as recently as Dec. 23.

At least 2 WESTERN KINGBIRDS are being seen at Elizabethan Gardens/ Fort
Raleigh on Roanoke Island in NC. From US 64 turn into the well- marked fort
and gardens. Bear left into the parking area where the park service
headquarters are located. The kingbirds have been seen anywhere in the trees
in and around the parking lot. They seem to like the bare deciduous trees
behind the headquarters building. This spot is only 15 minutes from the
ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER site.

A flock of 10-14 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS is still being seen at the
Grandfather Mtn. (NC) museum. The birds may be most dependable around 3:00 PM
but can show up anytime. Some patience may be required to see this flock, as
some birders have waited for hours for their look.

An imm. male BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD is still coming to a feeder near
Grennsboro, NC. Call Monte Tickle at 336-449-4289 for details.

3 SANDHILL CRANES were seen on the Morehead City CBC on Dec. 16. The birds
were seen in marshes adjacent to the North River and in flight heading for
farmland in central Carteret County.

A male EURASIAN WIGEON is being seen at Greenfield Lake in Wilmington , NC.
Check the flocks of Am. wigeon there.

Thanks this week to John Fussell, Heathy Walker, Jeff Lewis, Jenny Garner,
and Rob Van Epps for their calls and reports.
