Western Kingbird @ Battery Buchanen (Ft. Fisher)

>From about 10:00 to 11:00 this AM observed a Western
Kingbird fly-catching insects on and around Battery
Buchanen. The location is just south of the Ft. Fisher
ferry landing across from the Wildlife Commission boat
ramp. The bird used the live trees on top of Bat.
Buchanen as well as the leafless snags South and North
of the battery as take-off and landing sites for its
aerial forays. Last year a W. Kingbird stayed for
several days a mile or so north of here, so maybe this
guy will hang around for a bit.

There's also a Loggerhead Shrike in residence, Savannah
Sparrows, Nelson's Sharp-tailed Sparrows, Song
Sparrows, and an immature White-Crowned Sparrow in the
area. Don't confuse the Eastern Phoebe in fresh Fall
plumage with the Kingbird.

On Friday the 25th, there were numerous Blackpoll
Warblers in the shrubs and bushes along the new trail
the Rangers have cut. The trail starts on the S. side
of the State Rec. Area parking area, and runs toward
the pond on the E. side of the Aquarium. Those with
4-wheel drives may wish to continue on down the spit
about 3 miles where I observed an immature Reddish
Egret on Friday. This bird has been around off and on
since Aug. 6 of this year.
