The best place to start is with Birding by Ear (eastern edition).
This is not just a collection of bird songs, it teaches you how to
listen, what to listen for. And when you have made some progress with
that, add More Birding by Ear, which continues in the same way.

Eventually you will probably want to get the more complete Stokes
eastern set. The recordings are more thorough, and it covers far more
birds, but it lacks the tutorial aspect.

The Thayer's CD is wonderful, and includes far, far more than just the
songs, but it only runs on a computer (my best time for listening to
these is in the car) and the songs are really just short samples.

Good birding!
