Hello, this is a December 19 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird
Club. Highlights on this report include:
LONG-BILLED MURRELET
KING EIDER
WESTERN GREBE
WESTERN KINGBIRD
DICKCISSEL
LONG-TAILED DUCK
CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD
A LONG-BILLED MURRELET was seen 12-15 at Fort Macon SP during the Morehead
City, NC CBC. The bird was seen off the swimming beach section of the park.
It was not relocated later that same day but birders in the area should keep
a lookout for it.
Two KING EIDERS, a female and imm. male, have been seen around Fort Fisher
(NC). Check the ocean from the overlook at the State Historic Site ,and the
estuary on the west side of the State Recreation Area spit (4-wheel drive
needed here).
A WESTERN GREBE was seen 12-14 at Lake Julian south of Asheville, NC in
Buncombe County.
A CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD can be seen in Lexington County, SC. Call Suzan
Garland at 803-755-3826 for latest status of this bird.
Birders at Huntington Beach SP in SC should look for a LONG-TAILED DUCK in
the freshwater pond at that park.
On the Outer Banks in NC, a WESTERN KINGBIRD was seen in Southern Shores, NC
on 12-15 but has not been relocated. A female DICKCISSEL is being seen at
Outer Banks Birdwatchers, the bird store in Nags Head.
