Mecklenburg Audubon Field Trips - Feb. 8 and 22

Bird Watching Field Trips – February 8 and 22, 2003
sponsored by Mecklenburg Audubon Society
Free and open to the public

Saturday, February 8: McDowell Prairie [1/2 day]

Mecklenburg Park and Recreation is in the process of restoring this site in
McDowell Park to a Piedmont prairie similar to those that dotted the area
before the first settlers arrived. It has become the home of several species
of uncommon sparrows. It is also a haven for the endangered Schweinitz's
Sunflower.

We will meet at the Burger King on Westinghouse Blvd. at I-77. Be there by
7:30 AM to join a carpool to the area (parking limited).. Be prepared for
mud.

Information & Reservations: contact Taylor Piephoff at 704-532-6336.

Saturday, February 22: Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge (full day)

This is an opportunity to experience the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge at
its best – during late winter. The ducks should still be in high numbers;
sparrows will abound; and unusual bird species often can be seen here.

Dress in layers and expect mud. Also bring food and water [snacks and
lunch]. There will be a good amount of walking but it won’t be over rough
terrain unless we are in pursuit of something exciting.

Information & Reservations: Contact Judy Walker at 704-537-8181 for the
meeting place and time.
