A 1st winter male BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK is coming to a feeder in Elizabeth
City, NC. Call Shirly Remaley at 252-338-3492 for updates and to set up a
time to see the bird.

WESTERN TANAGERS are being seen in both Carolinas right now. A male is in
Summerville, SC.Call Shirley Hales at 848-875-2277 for directions and
permission to come see this bird. A female -plumaged bird is still coming to
a feeder in Morehead City, NC. Contact John Fussell at <jfuss@clis.net> for
updates on this bird.

DOVEKIES have been seen in the surf on the Outer Banks recently. On 2-3 a
single bird was at Southern Shores and 3 birds were 1/4 mile north of the
Rodanthe pier on 2-7. On 2-8 a single bird was in Oregon Inlet. Also at
Oregon Inlet on 2-8 was an imm. male COMMON EIDER.

Elsewhere on the Outer Banks, 6 SHORT-EARED OWLS were present over South Pond
on 2-8 and 3 SAW-WHET OWLS were seen and heard in the pine stand at Hammock
Hills Nature Trail on Ocracoke Island. These birds responded to whistled
imitations of their call.

Two SANDHILL CRANES were seen 2-11 at Lake Mattamuskeet in the Lake Landing
area.

A ROSS' GOOSE is being seen in western Orange County, NC. It is associating
with Canada Geese as they skip around a couple of ponds in the area. Best bet
is to check a pond at Anilorac Farm on Dairyland Rd. between Orange Grove Rd.
and Dodson's Crossroads. Birders have permission to park on the road shoulder
and look at the pond. The ROSS'S GOOSE has also been seen at a pond on the
west side of Dodson's Crossroad, just north of the intersection (unmarked)
with Arthur Minnis Rd.

An EARED GREBE was present 2-3 at Santee Coastal Reservein SC. Check the
first impoundment on the left.

Up to 28 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were present in a field along Hooper Ln. in
Henderson county, NC on 2-6. For more information call Wayne Forsythe at
828-697-6628.

Thanks this week to Nathan Dias, Bob Chinn, Jack Peachey, Jeff Lewis, Curtis
Smalling, Shirly Remaley, and Skip/Linda Morgan for their calls and reports.
