Saw my first Great Egret of the season in a swamp on old Erwin Road in
Durham.
In terms of the yard, the last of the juncos seem to have left on
Monday, but numerous White-throated sparrows are still hanging on. We
also have added Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Red-eyed Vireo and Black Vulture
to the yard list in the last week or so, as well as hearing Wood Thrush
and seeing Red-headed Woodpeckers in the neighborhood. We also have a
pair of Yellow-rumps in full breeding plumage - I forget how nice they
look that way. Non-bird related, but the best sighting so far at the
new digs has got to be the Grey Fox we had in the yard one afternoon a
couple of weeks ago. It stood about 15 feet from us and watched us
stare at it before trotting across the yard and into the woods. It was
a life mammal for me, and my front yard was a great place to get it.
