Loons at EPA-RTP

I haven't been to work yet but I will re-check the lake for the loons this morning and report back later.

In the meantime, here are some directions. The EPA-NIEHS lake is located between the two research campuses off T.W. Alexander Drive in Research Triangle Park. From Chapel Hill, one exits I-40 at the Apex or Alexander Drive exits. If the former, come east on HWY 54 until you get to Alexander. The old EPA building (brick and ugly) will be on the left at the Alexander - HWY 54 stoplight. Go right on Alexander. Go to the second stoplight on Alexander and then left.

If you take the Alexander exit (also the Durham Freway), you will go left on Alexander and proceed to the next stoplight where you turn left.

You will then be at the guard station and can get a visitor's pass for parking. I do not know if they will allow you to be unaccompanied on the grounds but maybe they will. If not, tell the guards that you are visiting me. They'll give you a parking permit for the visitors lot. When they do, come up the campus road (ACHTUNG! 30 mph!) and go right at the big EPA sign. The visitors lot will be in front of the A-B building on your right. Park there. If you are required to visit a particular person, go into either the big building with the big cement courtyard or the A-B building and go to the guard station there. Tell the guard you are visiting me and sign in. They'll call me and I'll come get you. My office is A-453 and the phone number is 541-7610. If I am not in the office, call my cell at 656-1097.

Of course, this is useless if the birds aren't there today but I like visitors. It makes me feel as important as Phil Johnson to have one. And it may not be totally useless since I've seen a bunch of buffleheads, some cormorants, mallards, and the ubiquitous Canada geese. If nothing else, turtles cover every rock outcrop in the lake. Oh, yeah, coming up the road, watch out for the goslings! There are quite a few of them.
