Hello, this is a May 23 update of the Carolina Rare Bird Alert featuring
birding news from North and South Carolina sponsored by the Carolina Bird Club.
Highlighhts on this report include:

FULVOUS-WHISTLING DUCK
SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS
BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS
RUDDY TURNSTONES (inland)
WILLOW FLYCATCHERS

At least one FULVOUS WHISTLING- DUCK is still being seen at Huntington Beach
State Park in SC. Look carefully in the vegetation around Mullet Pond at that
park.

SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHERS have returned to Monroe, NC (Union County) where
they have successfully bred for several years. For details contact Anne or
Blayne Olsen at <bolsen@trellis.net>.

BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS have been heard in several locations in the Croatan NF
in eastern NC. One good place to look may be along Little Rd. 1.2 miles south
of Catfish Lake Rd. A bird was in this same location in June of 2002.

RUDDY TURNSTONES are extremely rare in the mountains of NC. Six of this
species have been seen at Lake Oseola in Hendersonville, NC. For details call Wayne
Forsythe at 828-697-6628.

WILLOW FLYCATCHERS have returned to their Concord, NC (Cabarrus County)
breeding site. Where Hwy. 136 crosses the north end of Lake Don T. Howell , look
for Shimpock Rd. (gravel). Look and especially listen for these birds along
Shimpock Rd. from 136 to the top of the hill where the power lines cross.

Thanks this week to Wayne Forsythe, John Fussell, Heather Main, and David
Luther for their calls and reports.
