Ritch, and all,
Just to muddy the waters, the early editions of the Peterson Field Guides,
the ones I grew up on, have the following statement in the bobolink
description: These are the "Reedbirds" of the southern marshes...
I never heard them called reedbirds, but I did hear them called ricebirds
when I was growing up in Florida.
Veronica

If an "Inbox" could crash, I'm fairly certain mine would be on the brink
about now. I can't ever recall having so many responses to a single post on
carolinabirds.... and so quickly too. Thanks so much to everyone that
responded to my inquiry and enlightened me on the "rice-birds". I knew
Bobolinks were considered a pest by some farmers due to their ability to
inflict damage on certain crops, but I simply didn't draw the connection.
Thanks Again,
Ritch Lilly
