Hummer, catbird, New England, and back issues of The Chat

Howdy,

Lately I've noticed our male Ruby-throated Hummingbird perching often on
the hummingbird pole that the feeder is hanging on. We haven't seen one
do
this before this year, since they generally fly up to the maple or oak
tree out of sight after feeding. It gives me more time to watch him as
he's sitting perched, instead of hurriedly feeding. Yesterday he stayed
perched for
at least 3 minutes. Tonight during dinner he was either perched or
feeding for probably 25 of the 30 minutes. He must be fattening himself
up and conserving energy for the long trip ahead. Sure will miss him
when he leaves!!

I thought our catbirds had left early this year since I hadn't seen or
heard them in a week, but I was happy to see one yesterday after the
heavy storm passed through.

Shelley's migrants are getting me more excited about our birding trip to
New England. We leave Wednesday for three weeks, birding Cape Cod,
Parker River NWR, interior ME, and the Green Mountain region of Vermont.
If anyone has last minute tips for birding those areas, let me know
privately. We'll return just in time for the CBC meeting in Hickory, so
see some of you there!

I received the email below and offered to post it on Carolinabirds.

Happy birding! Karen Bearden
