September 's hig tides can make clapper rails go to
higher land--In and around Charleston, S>C> we used to
wait for tides of at least 6 foot seven inches to go
"marsh hen " hunting--One only had a window of around
a half hour to one hour to pole up on the highest
spartina "islands" that were a few inches higher than
the rest of the surrounding grass-they would swim away
with their just their head and neck out of the water
unless they were really pushed by the boat/polers. In
a season which lasted one month and started in early
Sept. there were usually only thjree days where one
could go. A seven foot tide was a perfect one but
usually would occur at night!
