This afternoon I birded Donnelley WMA and Bear Island WMA in Colleton County, SC with Jim Beard and Kent Davis. The water levels at Donnelly are nice and low in some impoundments, but the water levels are high everywhere on the east side of Bear Island.
While we missed the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks at Donnelley, we found:
Traill's Flycatcher (Willow/Alder)
Purple Gallinule
White Pelicans
American Bittern (posing beside the road)
Wood Storks
Anhingas (lots)
Pectoral Sandpipers
Long-billed Dowitchers
Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs
Least Sandpipers (flyby)
Baltimore Orioles
Summer Tanagers
Blue Grosbeaks
and other usual suspects
At Bear Island, we saw:
Merlin (hovering over diving PB Grebes)
Mottled Ducks
Black Terns
Gull-billed Terns
Black-necked Stilt
Glossy Ibis
White Ibis
Wood Storks
Anhingas (lots)
Bald Eagle (2)
Painted Buntings
and other usual suspects
