It got real slow here at Riverbend Park (northern Catawba County) this afternoon, so I decided to go on a little birdwalk. The first bird I saw as I stepped out of the office was an adult Bald Eagle! Not a bad way to start a birdwalk. Along the river trail, I had my first White-throated Sparrow of the season. Yes, winter is almost here. Through the rest of my walk, I had a splattering of birds including a few migrants like Wood Thrush, Scarlet Tanager, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Chestnut-sided, Palm, and Black-and-white Warblers. I also had a Sharp-shinned Hawk chasing a Cuckoo into the brush. On the way back to the office, one of the last birds I saw was an immature Bald Eagle! What a way to end a bird walk!
