North Mecklenburg waterfowl and others 11/2/03



My father and I headed out to Coddle Creek Reservoir and Lake Norman in
Cabarrus and Mecklenburg County respectively this AM to check on waterfowl
arrivals, and see what other birds we could find.
Highlights:

Coddle Creek Reservoir:
Ruddy Duck - 20
Canada Goose - 200
American Coot - 4
Kildeer - 1
Northern Harrier - 1 juvenile
Red-tailed Hawk - 1
Red-shouldered Hawk - 2
Black Vulture - 2
Great Blue Heron - 2
Belted Kingfisher - 1
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 1
Eastern Phoebe - 1
White-crowned Sparrow - 2-3, by the silo down Shimpock Rd.
Field Sparrow - 3-4
White-throated Sparrow
Song Sparrrow
Savannah Sparrow - 5-6 along the breast of the dam

overlooking Lake Norman at the Energy Explorium:
American Wigeon - 3
Lesser Scaup - 8
Golden-crowned Kinglet - many
Yellow-rumped Warblers

thermal ponds:
Pied-billed Grebe - 2
Mallard - 13

In previous years, Green-winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Gadwall, and
Redhead have already arrived by this date, but not this year.
Butterfly wise, many many Checkered White's at Coddle Creek, along with
Pearl Crescent, Sleepy Orange, Clouded Sulphur, Cloudless Sulphur,
Red-spotted purple, Buckeye, Gulf Fritillary, Sachem.
