President Roosevelt to King
George of Greece, December 5, 1940
I thank Your Majesty for your friendly
message which comes at a time when all free peoples are deeply impressed by the
courage and steadfastness of the Greek nation.
The American Red Cross has already sent
substantial amounts of funds and supplies for the relief of suffering in your
country and I am sure that my countrymen will give generously to the new organizations
which are being established for the same purpose.
As Your Majesty knows, it is the settled
policy of the United States Government to extend aid to those governments and
peoples who defend themselves against aggression. I assure Your Majesty that
steps are being taken to extend such aid to Greece which is defending itself so
valiantly.
