NOTE: MOVED TO STORAGE

I've taken my old fanfic archive and put it into storage. All of these links are well and truly dead, alas, but the commentary may still prove useful to someone. If you're trying to track something down (an unarchived story, the assorted Carolina Otaku Uprising sagas or, heaven forbid, my own fanfic) drop me a line: phil@unc.edu.

Welcome to Phil's personal fanfic archive - now with annotations! (Note: "Lemon" is the fanboy term for "features sex". Woo woo!)

.45 Caliber Angel - A series by Gryphon (of Eyrie Productions) based on the role-playing game In Nomine from Steve Jackson Games. While I dunno anything about the game itself, most of the key concepts get briefly explained in the fic itself. Besides, it's the adventures of a hard boiled angel detective, which always makes for fun reading. Currently at six parts, don't hold your breath for more any time soon. It also includes a short In Nomine story Major Delivery which seems to come straight from the "last night's role-playing game" school of writing. It's a cute story, but it doesn't really go anywhere.

Ranma's Apartment - Ranma finally says to hell with it and moves out. This is actually far more entertaining that it sounds. See Ranma realize just how poor he is! See Akane's fashion sense take a turn for the goth! See two young, testosterone ladden teens realize it's easier to neck when you're not in your parent's house! The highlights of the series are easily the Dr. Tofu scenes in part two. Part three becomes a quasi-crossover with Ah! My Goddess and has a lemmon scene. While there is a part 4 listed, it is only a beta; I'm not even sure if it's actually completed, or simply requires revision.

Blood of Dawn - My friend Lib is on a Kenshin fic ML and was ranting about some of the awful writing that she'd read on there. I decided to top it. Control of the series was quickly seized by a variety of COUP members eager to prove they could write worse than I could. Fortunatly, Blood of Dawn seems to have died out, but you can still flog yourself with what's festering in this directory. Also includes parts 1-4 of the Professor Saitoh series.

College Life - You'd think that self-insertion Sailor Moon fanfic about college life written by a lesbian would be the greatest fanfic ever made. Actually, it's pretty boring - I'm archiving it because I appreciate it conceptually. Or something.

Eight Days A Week - Mary Sue Ranma fic staring a gaijan who hooks up with Nabiki. Fun, and I'm all for any Ranma fic that's all about Nabiki.

Fanfic by Stephen "Twoflower" Gagne - No, I'm not sure where he got the name "Twoflower" either. In this directory:
Magical Trouble Shooting Crossover Scramble Team ALPHA! - UberCrossover of vast proportions. One self contained part that attempts to cram as many pop culture references as possible into a single, massive trainwreck.
Furniture Warriors - Exceedingly silly fanfic based on an obscure PlayStation fighting game.
Hiroshi and Daisuke Are Dead - Gagne lays waste to the the "darkfic" concept. Bonus points for guessing which play gets ripped off to provide the plot. (Ranma 1/2)
Juzya's Lyric - However, in his younger days Gagne was known to churn out the angst himself. The tale of the poor bastard who had the misfortune to be Azusa (Martial Arts Ice Skating with a kawaii streak two miles wide) Shiratori's brother. Amusing, in a bleak sort of way. (Ranma 1/2)
March of the Pigs - Gagne introduces a series of new characters who share Ryouga's peculiar condition. No, really. Cue porcine rampage. (Ranma 1/2)
Ministry of Confusion - If you're going to do a Ranma story set in a dystopian future, you should at least have the decency to be amusing in the process. Fortuantely, Gagne is. Orwell it ain't, but to be fair it has better one-liners than 1984.
Give Peace A Chance - More Ryouga wackiness, this time centering around his family. Hey, if Takahashi didn't do anything with them, someone might as well take a crack at it. If she were to write it, no dobut Rumiko would skip the hippie overtones, however. (Ranma 1/2)
Pulp Fanfiction - Hell, I forget what it's about myself. But it's certainly got a good title. (Ranma 1/2)
Quentin Tarantino's Ranma 1/2 - People like Ranma 1/2. People like Pulp Fiction. Therefore, folks will love a trainwreck of the two. Highly amusing if you're familiar with both. (Note: Not to be confused with Pulp Fanfiction.)
The Ends - Gagne takes every proposed resolution to Ranma 1/2 that he can think off, dredges up a few more, and tosses 'em all into a blender set on "puree". Be warned that reading this fic may purge you of any desire to read post-volume-38 Ranma fic.
Wicked Garden - This is mostly an extended exercise in doing terrible things to the mind of Kodachi Kuno, a mind that already has enough problems to deal with. Dark, dark, dark, in a particularly twisted sort of way.
Slayers Reflect - Gagne finally sets aside the Ranma fanfic monkey and begins writing Slayers fanfic that manages to capture the goofy feel of the series, without being nearly as dull. If you haven't seen any Slayers, don't sweat it - this is still a good read.

Gods Willing - Years ago the Eyrie Productions decided to bring their epic self-insertion adventures down to a somewhat less epic scale. One of the end results was a merger of their own lives with the series Ah! My Goddess. Alas, it never went beyond one chapter and an introduction...until the summer of 1999 when Gryphon posted part 2 out of nowhere. Amazing. Unfortunatly, while Part 1 is an amusing parallel to Ah! My Goddess' first episode, Part 2 didn't really click for me. It's not really that bad, just not amazingly good. Oh well, hopefully Part 3 will be more together.

Hearts and Minds - The latest Biles epic megafic. All I know is that it's an extensive Sailor Moon/Ranma crossover, and that my buddy Tim recommended it. I'll get around to reading it one of these days.

Hopelessly Lost - This was the other result of Eyrie Productions moving away from the Fanboy Wagner of the UF series. Gryphon and Zoner find themselves in the world of Bubblegum Crisis and become Knight Sabers in the process. As I'm a big fan of both BGC and the Eyrie boys, I really dig on HL. If the series seems to end abruptly with the third part, it's because parts four and five are still in production - and have been since 1994. Zoner has publicly stated that he has part five ready to go, and is just waiting for Gryph to wrap up part four. Amazingly enough, this recently happened, with Gryphon posting Part 4 in early 2000. It's interesting what a six year gap does to your writing style; it's a lot more mellow and coherent. Of course, in the grand Eyrie tradition it also looks like Gryph will be hooking up with Vision. Now if only Zoner could finish up Part 5. There is also an introduction and a short poem by Gryphon. To quote the maintainer of a guide to BGC fanfic, "I don't know anything about poetry." This is probably the safest answer to any inquiries about the literary merit of "Hollow".

Hearts of Ice - I'm a sucker for epic Ranma fanfic. This particular series goes for a supernatural twist, trapping Akane in the spirit world where she must learn to survive and attempt to escape. At 20 parts and counting, this series is theoretically going to be wrapped up "soon". Don't let that keep you from reading this seriese, however - it's good stuff.

I'm Here To Help - The quinessential anti-Sailor Moon fic. The antihero of the story proves once again how dull most of the senshi really are. And, to quote my buddy Tim, this author "really knows how to write a Rei obsession". Currently at six parts and a side story, the final part was already written but the author's hard drive melted before it could be posted. The author is finishing up a rewrite which will hopefully be completed shortly. As of mid-2000, it had been half a year, so this one may never actually get finished. Sigh.

Ill Met By Starlight - Answers the all-important question "What if Ranma was a psychotic bastard?" Brutal, bloody, dark, twisted, and vastly entertaining. 16 parts, plus an afterword and humorous outtakes. (Ranma 1/2)

Kid Dynamo - This is hands-down my favorite fanfic. Based on the Marvel comic series The New Mutants, this fic introduces a new character and proceeds to be more innovative and entertaining than the regular comic series itself was at its best. Damn fine stuff, even if you aren't familiar with the original comic itself.

Kakume Otaku Urami (Revolutionary Otaku Animosity) - A trainwreck of Utena and the Carolina Otaku Uprising, provided by resident bishonen Justin. Hoplessly in-jokey if you don't know the COUP regulars, but a hoot if you do.

Fanfic by Richard Lawson - Pretty descriptive, eh? Lawson is probably best known for his Ranma fanfic, particularly Thy Inward Love, Thy Outward Part, and Roses of Shadow, all of which are consistantly good and available elsewhere in this archive. This directory contains an assortment of Lawson's other fanfic, for Ranma 1/2, Nuku Nuku, his Robotech self-insertion stories, Sailor Moon, and Kimagure Orange Road. I've included the index to his homepage, which contains descriptions of his various fanfic.

Lemon Sherbert - Okay, first go over to the Miscellaneous fic section and read Lemonade, the Biles series where every single Ranma character manages to hook up with each other. Add the cast of Sailor Moon and you've got this sequel. Yeah, it's lemon fic, but it's highly amusing lemon fic. If nothing else, pop into the directory to check out the poster created for this series.

A Lesson In Love - Sure, it's yet-another post-volume-38 Ranma 1/2 fic that attempts to pair off everyone - but it's still a lot of fun, and wraps things up neatly. Currently at 16 regular parts plus a couple of beta chapters, this may never get completed, but it's still entertaining, and since the first 10 chapters or so are a single story arc, you can read those without having to worry about an never-ending cliffhanger.

Magical Girl Hunters - The damn things are everywhere. Waving their wands around, transforming in mid air and scaring decent people, and yelling ridiculous battle cries. Let's face it - magical girls are a plague on society. Thankfully, someone is starting to take care of the problem. A generally amusing round-robin series between several writers, the first few parts before it degenerated entirely are collected here.

The Maintenance of Illusions - More Marvel Comics fanfic, this time about the Avengers. I read a little bit of the first chapter and found it to be a viciously sarcastic look at what would really happen if there was a team of incredilby powerful superheros in New York dedicated to defending the world. More info to come when I actually read it.

Miscellaneous - A collection of one-shots, series collected as a single file, and whatnot, including:
Be Careful What You Wish For - The flip-side of Ah! My Goddess, showing what happens when folks not as disgustingly pure-hearted as Keichii and Belldandy enter into a contract from the Relief Goddess Hotline. These three short parts are all that appear to be written so far; hopefully the author will actually finish the series. No great shakes, but the idea was cute enough that I went ahead and archived it.
The Bitter End - A Ranma 1/2 story that deals with spouse abuse in a serious manner - from a somewhat unusual angle. Keep in mind that this story was written by an unabashed Ukyo fan. It's a good story, if horribly biased.
The Bubblegum Crisis Fanfiction Guide - Not much else to say about this. It's a bit dated, but still provides a good overview of the BGC fic scene.
A Christmas Carl - Ryan Matthew's vastly entertaining trainwreck of A Christmas Carol staring Carl Macek, who used to reign supreme as the most hated man in anime fandom. Those days are gone, but you can still wallow in the old-school bitterness with this fic.
Ultra-Condensed Fanfiction - This is a thread from the FFML that brutally (and humrously) reduces many popular series down to the bare bones needed to discuss them on IRC or whatnot. While I'm a fan of the series, I almost hurt myself laughing when I read the condensed description of Neon Exodus Evangelion.
Definitions of Hell - Speaking of trainwrecks, this is what happened when Richard Lawson fused together two of his popular Ranma stories, Thy Inward Love and Thy Outward Part. This won't make a lick of sense if you haven't already read both TIL and TOP.
Diamonds and Marinera Sauce - A crossover between the American TV series The Sentinel and the bizzare Japanese anime series Patarillo. If you've seen either series, you'll find this fic amusing, and if you haven't seen either one this fic will introduce you to both of them. Notable for being the only Patarillo fanfic I've seen on the net.
F3 Angel - Wacky, lemon fun when you graft the concept behind F3 (don't ask) and several Evangelion characters. Sick, sick, sick - I like it.
Flambe! - There are plenty of stories out there that center on Akane's cooking. Few, however, feature a technical guide on how to she can improve it. Like Water For Chocolate meets Ranma 1/2 in this suprisingly good fic. It also comes complete with tasty recipies for the cooking challenged.
Incohation: The Secret Origin of Gryphon and Eyrie Productions - Now, that's about a descriptive a title as you're going to find. You probably won't care about this unless you've actaully read anything by Eyrie.
Last Tour Before The Last Battle - In Sailor Moon, Crystal Tokyo is created when Queen Serenity and the Sailor Senshi decide to bring about Utopia, whether you like it or not. One imagines that a lot of folks out there wouldn't appreciate that. This is the story that made me long to have a patch with an inverted black crescent moon on it.
Lemonade - John Walter Biles wanted to write a parody of all the awful lemon fanfiction he saw on the net. What better way to do is than write your own lemon? The end result has the cast of Ranma sleeping with each other and anyone else who gets in the way, and is a hoot and a half. Be sure to also check out the sequel Lemon Sherbert.
Made of Stone - While the combination of "self-insertion" and "Sailor Moon" are enough to generally send sane people running in terror, I'm terribly fond of Sean Gaffney's story, if only because I'm as gibbering a Sailor Saturn fan as he is. Of course, I never claimed to be sane either.
Made of Stone: The Honeymoon - While Sean Gaffney was fanboy enough to write a fic where he hooks up with Hotaru, he drew the line at making it a lemon fic. Well, someone out there decided to do it for him. Oy.
Maya Ibuku Sleep-Tight Story - Also titled "Hot for Teacher", you can probably imagine what this is about. The worst Eva lemon fic to ever come down the pike, or just amusingly bad? You make the call. Not as inspired as the Eva/F3 crossover, though it does get bonus points for being completely incoherant.
Roses of Shadow - I never particularly cared for Kodachi, but have a much greater appreciation for her after reading this fanfiction. Ranma is kicked out of the house and winds up being taken in by Kodachi, where he begins to learn more about the particular problems the Kuno family suffers from. Another damn good Ranma fic by Richard Lawson.
Shizuku - A short, lushly written fic about Ranma, Akane, and single drops of water. No, really.
Smoke and Mirrors - In the aftermath of a horrific attack, Kasumi finds herself with the opportunity to save everyone she loved.
Special Vehicle Nights - The only Patlabor lemon fic out there, and one of the few Patlabor fic in general. While this isn't an amazing story, it is fun, competantly written, and features a suprising pairing.
Stepping Stones - The original bitter Ukyou fic. While this one spikes the angst-meter a bit, I'll still happily read anything that features my favorite okonomiyaki chef.
This Is The Way The Millineum ends - Ukyou celebrates New Year's Eve 2000 by getting laid. Woo woo!
Ukyou Can Cook - This, on the other hand, is a bitter Ukyou fic like no other, with an incredible suprise ending. Highly amusing, in a really sick sort of a way.
We Don't Do Okonomiyaki - Fanfic author Mike Loader used to write a series of pub stories that almost (but not quite) blatently ripped off Callahan's Crosstime Saloon. After his first encounter with Ranma as a younger fanboy, this crossover resulted. Warning: Reading this story may create an uncontrolable urge to go purchase a Pogues album.

Nabiki: New Horizons - Another entry in the "Fanfic I Haven't Read Yet" category. It came highly recommended by Joseph Palmer, someone whose fanfic I enjoy greatly, so I decided to go ahead and archive it for later reading. From what I've seen, this ongoing series is about Nabiki marrying a gaijin, moving to Hawaii, and having a family. Looks to be nothing at all like your standard Ranma fanfic, which is probably a good thing.

Neon Exodus Evangelion - Ah, where to begin. A few years ago, Gryphon (of the Eyrie crew) decided to write a series with a definate, pre-established beginning, middle and end (amazing, eh?) and that, for the first time, was not self-insertion. In addition, the fic would be on a strict biweekly release schedule, like a TV series. Quite ambitious - alas, it didn't quite live up to this. Neon Exodus Evangelion is an alternate view of the Eva world, based on the concept that a) Shinji wimps out and doesn't pilot EVA-01, and b) the new pilot they find is the son of Laura Croft. Whether it's a reaction to the spinelessness of Shinji or simply rampaging Mary Sueing, DJ Croft is an ego on the rampage, much to the annoyance of a whole lot of Eva fans out there. Despite this (or, perhaps, because of it) NXE is a whole lot of fun, and certainly more coherent than the series it is based on. This is finally completed - except, following the precedent set by Gainax - the story doesn't actually end with the regular series. To resolve the cliffhanger at the end of NXE 3.9, we'll all have to wait for NXE: The Motion Picture. Sigh. Part1, Part 2, and Part 3, plus an image archive and miscellaneous stuff relating to the series.

Otaku Rising - A lot of fanfiction has been written in direct response to the uberfanboy classic Undocumented Features. One of the more successful results was Otaku Rising. It takes the same basic concepts - reality altering tech, a college campus, and plenty of rampaging fen - but has an entirely different feel to it. And, unlike most post-UF self-insertion sagas, it's a lot of fun. The original story is here, with a variety of sequels and spin-off stories in the main directory. Rather than attempt to describe those (mainly because I haven't read them), you can read this guide to the series.

Pagliacci - Answers that age-old question, "What if the hapless magician Gosunkugi from Ranma 1/2 fell in Pool of Drowned Fabio?" Highly entertaining, and does an admirable job of giving poor Gos more screentime. (Previously most people had to make do with the terror of "Putting Your Heart in the Right Place" to see Gosunkugi in a major role. Gah.)

Joseph Palmer - One of the most celebrated (if not profific) Ranma fanfic authors, Palmer specializes in writing short vignettes that are dripping description and chracterization (if not plot). His first series was Seasons followed by Colors, which is still continuing. There are also a couple of revenge stories, as well as a couple of miscellaneous stories, including a terribly amusing self-parody Hot.

Phil's Fanfic - Fic by yours truly.
The Green Castle - This was written as an April Fool's Day prank on James Holman, world's most hardcore Kimagure Orange Road fanboy. The fic itself is hardcore, being a lemon about Kasuga's twin sisters, their psychic powers, and gratuitious sex. While I wouldn't call it good porn by any means, I do think it succeeds at being fairly amusing, and succeeded in pissing off James. I still get occasional e-mail from folks asking if I'll write a sequel. Fear it.
Friendly Advice - A short Ranma fic about Ranma being an asshole and Mousse being a sucker. This was promptly ignored by virtually everyone on earth. The only response I ever recieved by was someone who wrote a hate-filled letter about how I don't understand Ranma, obviously haven't seen a single episode, and that I'm a terrible writter. I replied with one sentence: "Ranma was fucking with Mousse." The response explained that they hadn't noticed that, that I was really a great writer, and they'd love to see more fic by me. Judge for yourself.
Revolutionary Lasagna Rathskeller - This was written for the first issue of Animosity, COUP's fanzine and is basically an extended in-joke about our favorite local restaurant. If you've never been to the Rat, this won't make much sense; of course, if you're reading this, chances are you've been to the Rat. Track down the original zine to appreciate Erin Ellis' fantastic illustrations for this fic.

Ranma .05 - The series many folks point to when they try to rationalize why they're reading lemon fic. Ranma .05 features a healthy amount of plot, in addition to a healthy amount of porn. If this is your sort of thing, it's good stuff. And, if it isn't your sort of thing, you can always say you're reading it for the plot. Heh. Yeah, right.

Serendipity - The epic fanboy self-insertion fic Undocumented Features spawned several imitators. Some, like Otaku Rising were pretty good. Then there were fic like Phil Moyer's Serendipity which weren't. It's not that the writing is technically bad or that his ideas are inherently awful. It's just that for a story about a fanboy hooking up with a Generic Anime Babe and her friends, obtaining all manner of Cool Anime Tech, and then saving the world (or at least his campus), it's incredibly dull. It's archived here as a reminder to all of us of what happens when self-insertion commits the ultimate sin of being boring.

Assorted Street Fighter Fanfic - I found these stories archived at Rod M's page, claiming these were his all-time fave fanfic. Apparently they're a series of origin stories for the original Street Fighter 2 characters from back in the day. I haven't actually had time to read these myself, but I went ahead and archived them to check out later.

Street Fighter: Warrior's Legacy - Gryphon and Megazone, those wacky guys from Eyrie Productions, are back with more self-insertion hijinks. Gryph is a World Warrior, following in the footsteps of his mentor Rose, who goes on adventures with his buddy Zoner, who is a full-fledged spy. Sure, it's silly, but it's also great fun, and is one of my favorite current Eyrie series being written. These are coming out at the rate of about one a year, so with lucky Part 5 will be out before too much longer.

The Dance of Shiva - By now you're probably wondering if John Biles writes anything besides smut. Well, here you go. Dance of Shiva is Biles' Bubblegum Crisis/Tenchi Muyo/Sailor Moon/Patlabor mega-crossover, complete with heavy Christian overtones. No, I'm not joking. It's actually pretty good...until you get to the epilogue where he coins the term "Astrohistory" as a Foundation-inspired science. That's when my buddy Tim and I decided to go get Janet Asimov and beat Biles down with a bat.

Sith Academy - When Darth Maul made his appearance in The Phantom Menace, he was a total badass. Ever wonder how he got that way? The Sith Academy shows the background of Darth's training under Darth Sidious, with lessons in offensive driving, retail sales, lawn mowing, and getting laid. It's hysterical stuff, until the fangirls take the Maul/Obi-Wan slash aspect and make it too serious. Still, be sure to read up until the point where Maul and Obi-Wan actually acknowledge each other as lovers.

Thy Inward Love - The definitive post-manga-38 "let's pair up everyone" Ranma series. Seeing as Takahashi isn't going to provide an ending to Ranma, you may as well accept Richard Lawson's version as the best one available. And, it really is quite good. In the same directory is Magic, a next-generation story about the Ranma crew's kids. Not as good, but reasonably entertaining.

The More Things Change - In case you hadn't noticed, I have a weak spot for epic Ranma fanfic. I have a particularly weak spot for epic Ranma fanfic that focuses on Ukyou. So, it's no suprise that The More Things Change is my fave Ranma fanfic series. After having Ranma and Akane finally hook up in the first chapter, the series transfers their relationship onto Ukyou and Ryouga. Not only does it manage to be a lot of fun, but The More Things Change also manages to introduce new characters into the mix that don't suck. This directory also includes the ongoing continuation series The Pursuit of Happiness. After long delays, the first chapter of Part 3 of The Pursuit of Happiness was finally made available; however, since then Rod M's fanfic page has vanished completely, so who knows if the series will ever be properly completed. Ah well.

Thy Outward Part - A series of what-if stories by Richard Lawson about Ranma being permanently trapped in her female form...and a young man who falls in love with her. People either love or hate this series. Either way, it's very well done.

Undocumented Features - Perhaps the most infamous of all fanfic, this is the ultimate in wish-fullfillment fanboy self-insertion. Our heroes Gryphon, Megazone and ReRob hook up with the Dirty Pair (or, in ReRob's case, get the Robotech Cyclone Consolation Prize), defend their beloved geek hangout at Worchester Polytechnic Institute, and blast off into space for an extensvie series of epic adventures. I'm a great fan of the series, despite (or because of) the overwhelming fanboyishness of it all. Start with the core series, then check out stories of the Golden Age, Exile, and Future Imperfect. While it's a Future Imperect story, the recent ongoing series Twilight has been given it's on directory. And, if you're not sure where to start, check out this handy guide. UF isn't for everyone, but it is highly recommended. And, if nothing else, be sure to appreciate their inspiration.
