My wife had missed hearing Alexander read her poem, so I thought I'd show it to her that night. I remember it being painful to listen to, and my wife thought it could use a few tweaks from the page. When I explained that the deliver seemed to be part of the problem for me, it clicked with her. She said something to the effect of, "Oh. *That* style of reading, where the words are supposed to have all the passion in them and you don't try to deliver it with any passion, you just read the words." And I thought to myself, yes, that's the problem. The words were sent forth in a breathy semi-academic style of poetry recitation. If someone with conviction and passion read Alexander's poem, it would have sounded a heck of a lot better. (This is aside from any issues with the poem's own style and substance.)

Just a thought. Presentation of poetry (especially to our generation of post-beat, occassionally-slam poetry) means a lot.
