ILS 281
Seminar in Internet Policies and Future Initiatives

About this seminar

The objective of this course is to enhance and extend our understanding of the technical and policy issues emerging on the Internet. As the topics suggest, we will be looking beyond the current WWW technologies and issues. At the same time, some portion of class time will focus on emerging applications and experimentation with multimedia tools for class presentations and on-line papers will be encouraged. The issues will be linked to "real world" events and discussed in their contexts as they relate to Information Science, Library Science and Mass Communications.

After an introductory period of a couple of weeks, class members will be asked to select one application area topic and one issue area topic (see class schedule). For application areas, class members will give a one-day presentation focused on the capabilities and specific software available in an emerging Internet application area. For issues, class members will give a 20-30 minute presentation to the class on their topic area and then lead a discussion during each of two class meetings. Papers in support of that session will be posted on this server.

To give you ideas, here is student work from previous classes taught by Bert Dempsey and Paul Jones:
Seminar in Internet Policy and Future Intiatives, UNC School of Information and Library Science, Spring 97

and by Paul Jones:
University of Virginia Seminar--Internet Issues, University of Virginia, Fall 1996

During each week, a brief in-class update will be expected from each class member on current events relating to his topic area. This will consist of a few notes on the weekly state of your topics--only a couple of minutes usually unless your topic area becomes very hot--these notes will be placed on the server and distributed via e-mail to the class discussion list.

The class discussion list will act to extend the class discussions and to help prepare the class for each presentation (in advance please). Participation in discussions, e-mail and seminar, will be considered in grading.
