NEW YORK - A federal judge has temporarily stopped an abortion foe from identifying his Web site as belonging to Planned Parenthood and selling an anti-abortion book from that home page.
The temporary restraining order, issued by U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood, stops Richard Bucci from identifying his home page as "Planned Parenthood's Home Page" and using "plannedparenthood.com" as a domain name.
The judge scheduled a Feb. 20 hearing on a motion for a preliminary injunction. Planned Parenthood Federation of America, which has its own Web site, had sued Bucci in Manhattan federal court alleging his use of the group's name infringed on its trademark.
According to court papers, Bucci is a well-known anti-abortion advocate in the Syracuse, New York, area and runs a local radio program in which he has urged protests at abortion clinics.
Planned Parenthood President Gloria Feldt said in a statement that Bucci was using the Planned Parenthood name to lure unsuspecting browsers on the Internet.
"Once drawn into this deceptive Web site, Internet users were sold another false bill of goods -- a book, hawked as being 'mightily objective,' but which is an anti-abortion polemic," she said.
