Tom Glocer is CEO of Reuters and he is also a blogger. Where better for him to publish an article called “Trust in the Age of Citizen Journalism” than on his blog?

The article is the text of a speech Glocer gave at “Globes Media Conference in Tel Aviv on Monday 11 December 2006.” About the talk he says: “It’s about trust in media today, taking into account the growing
popularity of blogging and all other types of citizen journalism.”

Reminds me that when I met Lobsang Wangyal, the Reuters reporter amongst exiled Tibetans, he was most interesting in talking about his newly formed Association of Tibetan Journalists. The Association’s biggest task, he told me, is preparing citizens to be journalists by educating them about strong and respected news practices — values, ethics and skills.

Glocer’s talk via Dan Gillmor and the Center for Citizen Media. Dan has his reservations about parts of the talk.

Gary has been preaching hell fire and damnation at UNC and other campuses or well over a decade that I can recall. But once he started up on Raleigh’s Fayetteville Street in front of the Wake County Courthouse, he upset the gentile dinners at Yancey’s Juke Joint who called the police.

They say you can tell a lot about a person by looking at their shoes. I have another theory. I think you can tell a lot about a person by looking at their web browser’s homepage. Unlike the choice of footwear or apparel, there’s nothing conspicuous about it. It’s very personal, offering true insight into a person’s interests, personality and priorities.

To give credit where credit is due, one of my professors got me thinking about this. I was sitting in the his office, and he opened Safari to show me a website. It opened to Apple.com - the default Safari homepage. He had never bothered to change it. Now, I don’t see this as a character flaw. I just suspect he’s way too busy and never thought to change it.

I also wish there was a plug-in or application that would give me you random homepage every time you opened Safari or hit the home button. You could set it to pull from a certain bookmark folder or to give you something completely random from the web. Maybe this exists, but I can’t seem to find it.

So I ask…What’s your homepage? What do you think it says about you?

I’ll go first. It’s CNN.com, but I’m thinking of changing it to something more controversial.

I’ll be off the net all day today (Wednesday), but I do have unrelated news. I have a poem upcoming in the News and Observer’s Sunday Journal. Not sure which Sunday as I write this. I can’t put the poem here since it needs to appear in the Sunday Journal first, but I can give you the 99 words of the introduction to the poem:

I heard a voice in the night saying “Joy is here” then after a pause “It might be insincere.” I noticed that the lines created a perfect triplet of three lines of three syllables with rhyme. Of course they should occur three times in a poem. But the poem’s length? The most magical number would be ninety nine; the sum of the sums of divisors of the first eleven integers. Incidental to this mathematical epiphany, I suddenly recalled William Wordsworth’s wonderful poem “The Tables Turned.” The birds sang as the sun rose. I wrote this poem. Hope you enjoy.

หรือใครสนใจแบบ live bloggin ก็ลองเข้าไปดูใน blog ของ David Wienberger [Folksonomy as symbol, K-Fed, Thomas Vander Wal, Social Tagging Panel] กับ Alice Marwick ได้เลยครับ

John Nichols of The Nation writes that Kevin Martin, our N.C.-born man at the FCC, is trying his unethical best to push through the rightly controversial merger of AT&T; and BellSouth. (One of the sticking points of the proposed merger is that it does not include any provisions to preserve network neutrality.) The gist of Martin's maneuvering is that he is trying to force one of the FCC commissioners to vote on the merger when that commissioiner has recused himself from the proceedings because of an obvious conflict of interest. In other words, Martin wants him to stop acting so darn ethically.
Readers in North Carolina should be particularly interested in this sleazy saga since, as Nichols points out, Martin fancies himself governor of our state. As Nichols puts it, Martin already has amassed "a campaign war chest full of telecommunications-industry contributions."
The full story is here.

PBase.com was conceived in July 1999 by Chuck “Slug” Neel, a programmer and photographer who wanted to find a site that suited his and others’ need to share and hot their digital and scanned film photos.

The site officially went online in August 1999, as photobase.org and the site has progressively grown since then. Later, the site name was changed to its current name, PBase, and Emily Neel, came on board to support the website as well.

The site’s motto and goal is to “be the best place on the web to display photos.”

Currently, the site has around 42 million photos. Around 45% of the users are from outside the US. (For example, there are 1329 accounts from users in Iceland.) The site is also rated, 628th, by Alexa.com Internet Traffic ratings.

For PBase to continue to support the already existing community and garner new users, some new features will need to be implemented.

Printing Service
Already in beta, the printing service will enable users to buy framed or unframed prints of their own and eventually other users' works. This way, instead of just saying that you like someone else's work in a comment or vote, you can buy their works to show support.

Popular Galleries and Images Policies
After extensive debate on the forums, PBase is working on a system that will serve the needs of users that are ok with and support nude photography and those that do not (or atleast don't want to see it on the public areas of the site). One interactive suggestion that has been brought up is a tagging system that will enable users to vote on a gallery as being "innappropriate" for the public areas. Once a gallery or image garners enough of these votes, they will be removed from the public areas for users that elect to have only appropriate material.

This system will bring users together in a common goal of making PBase the way they want it to be. For those that are ok with nudity, they will see it and for those that do not, they won't. In either case, users will aide administrators in cleaning up the site. These are just suggestions and users and PBase administrators are considering other options in this debate in order to ensure the happiness of the most users.

Improved World Database
PBase plans to provide a more extensive world database so that users can look up photos from their area or another part of the world that they are interested in.

Camera Database Changes
Like many other areas of the site, PBase plans to do some changes on the interface to make if more user friendly. One project that I am working on is the camera database where users can find sample images from thousands of different cameras and leave comments or reviews detailing their experience with a certain item of equipment. We are going to make the layout a little easier to navigate and make sure that valuable comments show up on the pages first.

These are just a few of the changes that can sustain and encourage the community present on PBase. As this community grows, it will be necessary to take on more of these projects to compete with other sites and keep users interested and excited about the services they offer.

Currently, I work for a company called PBase.com, a popular photo hosting and photosharing website based out of Durham and decided with my insider’s look and outside objectivity to analyze the site as an online community.

In this study, I hope to consider all aspects of virtual communites and explore the nature of the variety of social interaction found on this popular photosharing website. In addition to a place to store photos, the site also supports user interaction through forums, comments, votes, guestbook posts, and user to user email known as "pmail".

I’ve been watching this show Dexter on Showtime. If you haven’t seen it, the concept is simple. Dexter, the show’s hero, is a Miami Police Department forensics expert. He’s also a serial killer. Actually, he’s a serial killer who only kills other serial killers. It takes a lot of work to make a character like this likable, let alone sympathetic, and the show pulls it off. Personally, I think the opening credits are the best part.

The credits do a great job of bringing the “eccentricities” of the title character to the audience in a way that we can understand. Instead of the blood and gore of a murder, they give us the tiny violence of everyday life, like shaving your face, tightening your shoelaces or squeezing an orange. It’s beautifully shot, and really add an interesting angle to the character.

Check out this New Yorker review for another perspective on the show.
