Let the Bell Toll for Whom
"Whom" is no longer an essential part of our language, and I'm in favor lf letting it die, much as we've let the true subjunctive fade out for the most part. What's funny is that in trying to sound educated for their correct use of whom, many people use it incorrectly. Such misuse directly contradicts any vestige of a point in keeping the word around.

An example of a similar form that has mostly dropped out of the language is "thou." A few hundred years ago, the use of thou or you signified a class distinction, but as (in theory) class distinctions became less important, thou stopped being used in most situations, and now we've got the catch-all second person pronoun that makes one third of verb conjugation pretty easy.

While I think it's silly to have committees and associations whose aims are the preservation or regulation of the language through the prescription of further rules and vocabulary lists, I am in favor of allowing a sort of organized change through widespread omission. Those who know me are aware that I know a little bit about grammar, and some have excused themselves for speaking "incorrectly." Fact is, as long as I can understand what you're saying, I don't care how you say it, so long as you're not putting on airs by, say, misusing "whom."

Let the pronoun die, then, I say. Pull the plug on your to-whom-would-you-like-to-speaks and make way for who-do-you-wanna-talk-to?
