If you receive an e-mail message with the subject line "Good Times", DO NOT read the message, DELETE it immediately. Please read the messages below. Some miscreant is sending e-mail under the title "Good Times" nationwide, if you get anything like this, DON'T DOWN LOAD THE FILE! It has a virus that rewrites your hard drive, obliterating anything on it. Please be careful and forward this mail to anyone you care about. WARNING!!! INTERNET VIRUS The FCC released a warning last Wednesday concerning a matter of major importance to any regular user of the Internet. Apparently a new computer virus has been engineered by a user of AMERICA ON LINE that is unparalleled in its destructive capability. Other more well-known viruses such as "Stoned," "Airwolf" and the "Michaelangelo" pale in comparison to the prospects of this newest creation, by a warped mentality. What makes this virus so terrifying, Said the FCC, is the fact that no program needs to be exchanged for a new computer to be infected. It can be spread through the existing e-mail systems of the Internet. Once a Computer is infected, one of several things can happen. If the computer contains a hard drive, that will most likely be destroyed. If the program is not stopped, the computer's processor will be placed in an nth-complexity infinite binary loop -- which can severely damage the processor if left running that way too long. Unfortunately, most novice computer users will not realize what is happening until it is far too late. Luckily there is one sure means of detecting what is now known as the "Good Times" virus. It always travels to new computers the same way in a text e-mail message with the subject line reading "Good Times." Avoiding infection is easy once the file has been received -- not reading it! The act of loading the file into the mail server's ASCII buffer causes the "Good Times" mainline program to initialize and execute. The program is highly intelligent - it will send copies of itself to everyone whose e-mail address is contained in a receive-mail file or a sent-mail file, if it can find one. It will then proceed to trash the computer it is running on. the bottom line here is - if you receive a file with the subject line "GOOD TIMES," delete it immediately! Do not read it! Rest assured that whoever's name was on the "from" line was surely struck by the virus. Warn your friends and local system users of this newest threat to the Internet. The point about this 'virus' is that it is not a virus in the sense that everyone expects. It seems to be a perfectly normal email message but the message 'is' the 'virus'. What is virus-like about it is that people naturally copy the message to all their friends and so it arrives all over the place, clogging up email and filling up disc space. My mother-in-law told me that the document in question is an Word document with a built-in macro that runs when you open it. If, like me, you use an e-mail reader which views Word documents by loading them in to Word, then the "executable" runs. Although I see why the confusion. It looks like we are getting two viruses mixed up. The good times is a hoax. It is a virus in the sence that it takes up lots of bandwidth and fills the mail boxes. There are virus's going around in the form a MS word macro. If your mailer automatically opens attached documents using word, it can infect all of your documents. Unfortunately I have thrown the writeup that I recieved from Sandia National Labs away. There is a cure and a word macro to load that will check all of your documents before they are loaded. I would highly recommend anyone that has this type of mailer get the cure. Here are some pages that anyone that has not heard of this type a virus should read. The software is called JanuSys and is available on the World Wide Web at: http://agrss.sherman.hawaii.edu/caldwell/janusys.htm JanuSys provides an object-oriented framework for modeling and simulating hierarchical systems. It helps organize the creation of families of submodels (e.g., crop models) that can then be integrated to simulate agricultural systems. I have verified that (1) we have recreated the plant component of CERES-Wheat within the JanuSys framework, and (2) we can simulate any sole crop of wheat as a mixture of any practical number of competing sub-populations (i.e., the rule I have been using in the development of CropSys, a FORTRAN-based model). The power of the framework should ultimately be proven as we try to simulate complex intercrops integrated at the whole-farm level. The JanuSys framework permits dynamically creating any practical number of hierarchical levels, with each level having any practical number of objects. INVITATION It is my great pleasure to encourage and invite you, your colleagues, and accompanying persons to come to our international symposium on Plant Production in Closed Ecosystems in Narita in August 1996. The main theme of this symposium is not only space farming but also environmental conservation of the earth because it is also a closed system. Analyses in small scales are not only valuable, but also essential for total system analysis. The symposium consists of two parts, the special lecture session of distinguished scholars from around the world and the contributed technical presentations, either oral or in posters. The symposium site we chose is the Rihga Royal Hotel in Narita, which is the main airway entrance gate to Japan and also the site of New Tokyo International Airport. Access to the symposium site, takes about 10 minutes from the airport by bus or taxi. The site is not far from the metropolitan Tokyo area, about an hour by train to the central part of Tokyo, and you will be able to enjoy the large city life. As you may know, I will be retiring in March 1997 from the University of Tokyo. It is very traditional to have some kind of commemorative events, to celebrate retirement from the University of Tokyo, and the symposium was planned for this occasion. It does not mean my complete retirement from research and teaching, but it is my understanding that one purpose of a large ceremony is to encourage younger persons to grow and expand our area. I appreciate the efforts of all of the younger staff, including graduate students in our area, who helped in the preparations for this symposium. GENERAL INFORMATION 2.1 Date and Location The International Symposium on Plant Production in Closed Ecosystems will be held at the Rihga Royal Hotel Narita in Narita, Japan on August 26-29, 1996. All of the scientific sessions and the related events, except for the tours, will be scheduled in the hotel. The hotel is located near Narita International Airport (New Tokyo International Airport) and is 10 minutes from the airport by complimentary hotel shuttle bus. This includes any type of system in which living plants or parts of a plant (cells, cell aggregates, tissues, organs, etc.) are cultured and/or maintained under artificially controlled conditions in a restricted space. Examples are: * CELSS (Closed Ecological Life Support Systems) or CBLSS (Closed Bioregenerative Life Support Systems), which are at present being intensively investigated in relation to future space travel. Plant production will play an important role, not only for food production, but also for material circulation within the system. * Plant cell, tissue culture systems, and transplant production systems, in which cultured materials experience significantly different environmental conditions compared to outside or in vivo conditions. * Plant factories and greenhouses, in which the plants' environment is substantially different from that outside and environmental control significantly affects the productivity. * Postharvest systems, in which living products also experience artificially controlled environments. Contributed papers (oral and poster presentations) will be published in Acta Horticulturae, the formal proceedings of ISHS (International Society for Horticultural Science), and a copy of the Acta Horticulturae will be sent to all the registrants of the symposium also by the end of the year. 3. A 35mm slide projector and an A4-size overhead projector will be available in each oral session room. The time allocated for each oral presentation will be 15 minutes, including discussion. A 90cm square board will be provided for each poster display in the poster presentation room. A discussion period will be assigned for poster sessions on August 28 and 29. Each presenter of a poster presentation will be requested to stand in front of his or her poster and explain the presentation at the assigned poster session. A person intending to present a contributed paper should state a preference (oral or poster presentation) when submitting an abstract to the Symposium Program Committee. Please refer to Section 4, "CALL FOR PAPERS" for detailed information. 3.3 Workshops The Symposium Organizing Committee anticipates workshops being held during the symposium. Meeting rooms (2 or 3) will be available on the evening of August 28. Each workshop should consist of 10 to 20 participants and focus on a specific topic related to the symposium. Registrants are encouraged to propose topics and organize the workshops voluntarily. The committee is willing to assist in this effort. CALL FOR PAPERS 4.1 Abstract A person intending to give an oral or poster presentation at the symposium is requested to submit the "PAPER PRESENTATION APPLICATION FORM" (Form C) together with a one-page abstract to the Symposium Program Committee (Chairman: Dr. Toyoki Kozai, Chiba University) no later than April 30, 1996. All abstracts will be reviewed by the Symposium Program Committee, and authors will be notified (accepted, acceptable with revision, or rejected) by May 30, 1996. Early abstract submissions are encouraged. Since accepted abstracts will be photocopied and printed in the Abstract Book, please follow the instructions below when preparing your abstract. Please refer also to the "Sample Abstract" (Form D) enclosed. * The one-page abstract must be in English and typed, single spaced, on a white sheet of A4 (21.0×29.6 cm) or U.S. letter paper (8.5×11 inches). * The entire abstract (title, author name(s), addresses, and text) must fit inside a rectangle 150 mm by 235 mm. * The minimum length of the abstract text is 400 words. * Please use 12-point, Times Roman font and use a laser printer or an electric typewriter with carbon ribbon to print the abstract. * Indicate presenting author with an asterisk (*). Leave one blank line after the title block and two blank lines after the author block. Type the title in capital letters. Do not center the title. Italicize or underline names of plant species in the title and text. * First lines of text paragraphs should have a three-space indentation. * Please send Form C and one original and two copies of the completed abstract. Please use a large envelope, and do not fold the abstract. * Please indicate whether the paper is to be presented orally or as a poster. 4.2 Papers Full papers of accepted abstracts must be received by the Symposium Program Committee no later than July 10. All full papers will be reviewed by the Symposium Program Committee and presenters will be notified (accepted, acceptable with revision, or rejected) by July 31. Early full paper submissions are encouraged. A person who receives the notification of 'acceptable with revision' is requested to submit the revised paper at the registration desk of the symposium on August 26, 1996. Accepted full papers will be included in Acta Horticulturae (the proceedings of the symposium), which will be published within three months after the symposium. Authors should follow the "Author's Guide for Publishing Papers in Acta Horticulturae" in the writing kit which will be provided with the notification of abstract acceptance by the Symposium Program Committee. The absolute maximum length of the paper is six pages, without exception. A copy of the Acta Horticulturae will be sent to all the registrants (except accompanying persons) by the end of the year. Note: If the complete registration payment for the symposium is not received by June 30, 1996, the scheduled oral or poster presentation will be cancelled. A person whose abstract is accepted, but whose full paper is rejected, can give an oral or poster presentation at the symposium if the registration has been completed and fees have been paid in full. The full paper, however, will not be included in the Acta Horticulturae. 4.3 Submission of Abstract via Internet Abstracts can be submitted by e-mail. If an abstract is submitted by e-mail, all subsequent correspondence will be done by e-mail. It is not necessary to mail Form C if the requested information from the form is provided with the abstract. The original WordPerfect 5.1/6.0 or MS Word 6.0 file of the abstract can be sent as an encoded text file. Instructors will teach tips on Japanese language and typical phrases used in various circumstances such as shopping or in restaurants. Fee: free. August 26 (Mon): Afternoon Shinshoji Temple and Japanese Garden Take a walk into the old Shinshoji Temple through the historic approach. The approach extends about 800 meters from Keisei Narita Station to the precincts of the Shinshoji Temple. Behind the main temple building of Shinshoji, you will find the large, beautiful Japanese Garden of Naritasan Park. Transportation by bus. Fee: \500. August 27 (Tue) Asakusa and Sumida River Boat Trip You should not miss the visit to Asakusa, one of the most famous tourist sites in Tokyo. Leave the hotel by bus and take the Keisei train and subway to get to the historic Asakusa area. After lunch, you will join the boat trip on the Sumida River. Take the JR train, Keisei train, and bus back to the hotel. Fee: \2,500. August 28 (Wed) Boso-no-Mura Museum and National Museum of Japanese History Take a step back in time to visit Boso-no-Mura Museum. This museum preserves traditional Japanese buildings such as farm houses, merchants' houses, and samurai houses of the Boso district from the latter Edo period to the early Meiji period. After lunch, you will visit the only national museum in Japan specializing in Japanese history, archaeology, and ethnology, preserving 110,000 objects. Transportation by bus. Fee: \1,500. August 29 (Thu) Ikebana and Tea Ceremony Experience Ikebana, the Japanese traditional art of flower arrangement, and a traditional tea ceremony, where you can enjoy the taste of Japanese tea and sweets. We measure transpiration rates, photosynthetic rates, root respiration, and canopy temperatures of wheat and soybean canopies at varying temperatures, PPF, CO2, and humidiy over long time periods, even full life cycles. The survey was only published in the Grower and in an Ergonomics society conference proceedings. I did produce an internal report which I'd be happy to send you if its OK'd by Kath (I'll email her next). You may be more interested in a similar, but more comprehensive survey I carried out for the DESSAC project last year which was sent to arable growers. I will happily send you the questionnaire but would have to get the OK from partners to release the data to you as some of it is a bit commercially sensitive. I'm hoping to publish the less sensitive bits soon. The HGCA carried out their own little 'who owns computers' survey at the recent 'roadshow' events. Paul Meakin is the person with the data there. Let me know which questionnaire you fancy and I'll pop it in the post. RE: your correspondence with David Davies. David showed me your letter and asked if I'd pop up and discuss it with him fairly soon. As he's one of our directors the item is on the top of my 'list of things to do as soon as I get back into the office'! I'm trying negotiate a diary slot with his secretary but in the meantime I don't suppose you could tell me a bit more could you? For example what exactly is a 'BBSRC Bioinformatics Visiting Fellowship'?? Can I get some literature on it from the BBSRC? A leaf will begin to senesce when its carbon losses exceed its carbon gains ie. it just respires away. So how does LAI affect the carbon balance of a leaf? Well, the LAI will determine the amount of light that reaches (by exponential attenuation) a given depth within the canopy. Where the PPF is insufficient to overcome carbon losses, then those leaves will begin to senesce. Now, the LAI at which this happens will depend on 1) canopy structure, or a simple model for it is the 'k' value, or extinction coefficient. 2) Incident PPF (ie. sun vs shade leaves), 3) growth rates (ie growth respiration), 4) temperature (ie respiration rates), and 5) nutrient and water supply. These of course are crop specific parameters. As far as the tree orchards having less yields as planting density increased (Peter Spyke)....I would think that maybe competition for nutrients occurring belowground may play a key role in determining yield, if everything else was optimal. But sometimes we can use some more simple models that assure the reasonable accuracy and are more understandable. this is similar to our discuss we can talk about many crop charactristics which have influence on the amount of this LAI like those you wrote but if you remember I wrote in my first mail that we assume an optimal conditions and an average of crop parameters as whole. I am sure that you have read in different crop physiology books a rather fixed value for a character of C4 or C3 crops, so then you can claim that it is not right as different C4 crops have different leaf angles or else and else..., but as a whole you might accept that we can claim a representative value for a crop or a group of them. Anyway, one of the reason I like qunatitative crop evaluation is that though we know many things about them sometimes we cannot say a value for a character and in this way modelling guides us to lack of our knowledge. Regarding to (Peter Spyke) about the Citrus trees, as far as I know we have an optimum plant density which after that the competition for resource capture reduce the yield. After increasing the density if there is no pest or disese problem, and we have used more management resource ( water, fertilizer, ...) the only limiting factor could be radiation. We have not to forget that in very high density there is no weed harm than the crop itself. As Oscar wrote I am sure that there are more people that could suggest other especial things about the Citrus.
