My expertise lies in remote sensing through the atmosphere and have in the recent past been involved with the development of vegetative canopy models. Such models produce reflection signatures (BRDF) that are of use to the remote sensing community. For funding reasons, I have had little recent opportunity to do such research. Additionally, I am presently involved with a laboratory outreach program called The Supercomputing Challenge. The group of high school students that I am working with are interested in the last ice age and what affect such an ice age would have on modern America. In this regard, I am looking for relatively simple crop yield models. The idea is to be able, knowing precipitation, solar flux, etc., what yields (in a rather coarse sense) could be expected. Of course, I will eventually need to find some sort of mapping of farm soil fertility in present day America. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, bill powers

A degree in Mathematics but no experience in ag trial research or statistical analysis. NOW, finally, can an empirical formula be developed that would relate air temperature changes, soil temperature changes, asparagus plant response? What would be some of the underlying assumptions as to those relationships. (i.e. do underground parts have a power relationship to soil temperature)? A professor Marr at the University of Kansas published a linear formula that seemed to fall apart when I tried to apply it. If you think this problem worthy of further work please let me know. You might vector me to some tools or research to help solve the problem. Sum all this on a daily basis and there you have it, as long as temperature doesn't interact with other environmental variables. In Tanzania, people say that you need for one cow as many hectares as there are months in the dry season. I have always found this is a very nice shortcut, and it can be used to do some meaningful calculations. Note, however, that the average Tanzanian cow is probably closer to 0.5 livestock unit than to 1! Rene' G.

I would like to take you through this a step at a time, because there will not be one generic relationship. I will start by assuming that as you are at the University of Western Australia you are dealing with subterranean clover dominated pastures on sandy soils, and that it is a mediterranean environment where the annual pastures are germinated by autumn rains, that growth is maintained through winter but mostly takes place in spring until the soils dry out and the clover flowers and sets seed in October-November. The amount of seed set will be affected by the biomass towards the end of the growing season. Animal stocking rate will determine biomass both during and at the end of the growing season. Biomass in turn will affect intake and the stocking rate or density that can be supported (nice feedback loop). See the following papers for more explanation, particularly White et al. (1983). Graham (G.W.) Arnold (ex-CSIRO, W.A.) did some relevant studies - see for example (Arnold and Dudzinski 1967, Australian Journal of Agricultural Research 18, 349-359) - including having a look at the seed pool, which will be a major factor in determining potential plant density in the following season - I am not sure if that was ever published. I am aware that there is still some modelling of the dynamics of subterranean clover pastures within CSIRO, W.A., but I am not very familiar with it. See also Graham's paper in the Proceedings of the Australian Society of Animal Production in 1982 for a framework of a model for a clover-ley system. White et al. (1983) also estimated the seed pool for annual pastures in northern Victoria for each year of a simulation in which stocking rate and date of lambing were the major management variables. I suggest you also talk to somebody like Kimbal Curtis, a competent pasture-livestock modeller in W.A. Agriculture, and familiarise yourself with the GrazPlan/GrassGro model developed by Drs John Donnelly, Mike Freer and Andrew Moore of the CSIRO Division of Plant Industry. I hope this helps; the more you start studying grazing systems, the more complex and intriguing they become. It really depends what the objective of your overall study is as to how much detail you require. Further reading: White, D.H. Nagorcka, B.N. and Birrell, H.A. (1979). The Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems (GCTE) core project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) has published a summary of wheat models and field data sets that can be used for testing wheat models (i.e., "Model and Experimental Meta Data", Report No. 2). I hope to produce the same type of publication for models of weed/crop, tree/crop, and multiple cropping systems, and I am in the process of developing a research proposal to fund the work (GCTE Task 3.4.3). Modifications included: * changed phenology response to low temperature. * reduced radiation use efficiency at low temperature. * reduced rate of harvest index increase during grain fill at low temperature. * an increased time lag between silking and the start of grain growth at low temperature. * simulations were stopped when a frost (min air temperature <-1 C) occurred. The modified model gave good agreement between independent datasets and simulated values of phenological events, grain biomass and total biomass in our cool-temperate climate, without affecting the model's performance in tropical and sub-tropical climates.
