The CD also has HTML training materials and a stand-alone version of NCSA Mosaic that was developed and tested under Windows 3.1. The actual WEPP model and interface can be run under Windows 95 in DOS mode, and we can provide instructions on how to accomplish this. We will also be developing a new WEPP interface which will be designed to function under Windows 95+, during the next 1-2 years. We have had problems with running the stand-alone version of NCSA Mosaic on the WEPP CD-ROM and viewing the HTML training materials under a Windows95 operating system (the first page comes up, but the system is confused about the hot link document locations on the CD-ROM). Other browsers that you may have might work to view the documents (I-View works, Network Explorer does not). HOWWET? ("Freebairn, David" <FreebaD@tbacrm001.prose.dpi.qld.gov.au>)

Date: Thu, 04 Apr 96 13:10:00 gmt From: "Freebairn, David" <FreebaD@tbacrm001.prose.dpi.qld.gov.au> Subject: HOWWET? Brief description of HOWWET? The key to making best use of rainfall is to adjust crop and soil management in response to changing conditions. This means knowing what the moisture and nitrogen status of your soil is now! (This is particularly the case for cropping in the semi-arid tropics where fallow (non-crop period) rainfall is stored in clay soils with high water holding capacity HOWWET? is a computer programme which uses farmer rainfall records to estimate how much rain has been stored and how much nitrogen has been mineralised in soil during the fallow between crops. The WINDOWS? based HOWWET? functions as an educational tool as well as a user-friendly decision support aid. Plant available water is calculated by keeping track of daily evaporation, rainfall and runoff. The outcomes can be modified by changing levels of management (through cover), soil water-holding capacity and climate. Inputs have been simplified by providing a range of soil types and climate localities. Default plant-available water capacities can be overwritten in the programme to customise a soil response. Tables of weekly temperatures and evaporation rates are held for each location. The hydrology component of HOWWET? is derived from the PERFECT and APSIM models. Rainfall is entered in a calendar format of rain days. Files of rainfall can thus be stored separately or appended to form a large calendar from which subsets of rainfall can be chosen. District rainfall data can be entered from public domain meteorological files, but generally the intention of HOWWET? is to develop farmers experience in relating local weather patterns and the storage of water in their soils. Output from HOWWET? is given either as a table of total rainfall, runoff and evaporation for a period or as a series of graphs depicting the plant available water in the soil profile. Since the algorithm for evaporation considers water loss only from the surface 200 mm, the graphs show the daily fluctuation of soil water in the surface layer and the accumulation of water in the lower safe layer of the soil profile. A rainfall histogram is overlain by runoff bars when runoff occurs. Mineralised nitrogen for the fallow period is given as a single value or as a graph showing daily accumulation in juxtaposition with graphs of daily temperatures and soil moisture in the surface layer. Denitrification under ponded conditions is not considered. A summary of daily rainfalls is available as a calendar table of as a combined graph with a monthly histogram of actual rainfall being superimposed over a line of average monthly rainfall for the chosen location. Context sensitive Help is available in most situations by clicking on the button located within the various windows of the program. The program will be used in future crop water workshops. Evaluation copies had already been distributed and the program would soon be available for downloading at the Queensland Department of Primary Industries Internet site (http://www.dpi.qld.gov/longpdk). Members of the project team are David Freebairn, Gus Hamilton, Peter Cox , Dean Holzworth, John Dimes and Steve Glanville. I can suggest key references in both areas if you need both. Dear Tom, In the recently appeared book Kabat P. Marshall B. Broek B.J. van den Vos J. Keulen H. van (Eds.) The book is the one that let us wait almost six years after the meeting in Wageningen it is based on. I should say, it was worth waiting, but it's unfortunately also worth quite some money as well, at least in Europe. I am trying to model the crop growth troughout the year in terms of leaf area index. For this purpose I would like to use some equation of the EPIC model. Unfortunately the values of some parameters of the equations are missing. Particularly I refer to the 'ahj, 1' and ahj, 2' in equation 2.198 pag 47 of the model documentation issued in september 1990. That equation is to evaluate the Heat Unit Factor from the Heat Unit Index, and vary for each crop. There is a table in the User Manual (tab. III.1), in which some of the crop parameters are listed but that one is missing. I would be grateful if anybody could tell me how to retrieve those values. I am not doing research on crop modeling, but I consider the models approach as one of the best tools in trying to understand all the variables and pro- cesses involved in crop growth and the making of crop yield. In this sense,it is an excellent teaching tool. As I do not know a textbook for such introductory course,I take in- formation from Hay & Walker,1989,"An Introduction to the Physiology of Crop Yield",Longman, and Loomis & Connor,1992,"Crop Ecology:Productivity and Mana- gement in Agricultural Systems",Cambridge U,Press. We are trying to design some practical work for this course, depending mainly on Hall et al.,1992,"Photosynthesis and Production in a Changing Envi- ronment",Chapman & Hall.We are looking for practicals that can be done with simple and inexpensive equipment. As examples for our teaching,I would like to have references on mode- ling of banana, mango, papaya, pineapple, avocado, tomato, potato and grape. In summary,I would like to have comments, criticism and suggestions on how to confront such a course. Regards, Eovaldo Hernandez

Date: Mon, 29 Apr 96 08:00:51 PDT From: lpachepsky@asrr.arsusda.gov Subject: RE: introduction Dear Eovaldo, I am deliberately sending this message not to you personally, but to the entire list, perhaps the information is interesting to some other people, and it's a chance to introduce myself. For the first thing, the book "Plants and Microsclimate. A quantitative approach to environmental plant physiology" Second Edtion, by Hamlyn G. Jones, 1992, Cambridge University Press, is one of the best for both, teaching and working with modeling, in my opinion. Second, we recently developed a two-dimensional model of photosynthesis and transpiration accounting for plant anatomy. The short article with application to soybean was published in the "Journal of Biogeography", Vol 22, 209-214, "A two-dimensional model of leaf gas exchange with special reference to leaf anatomy", the full description of the model parameterized and validated for tomato, and applied for some ecological problem is now in press in the "Ecological Modelling", I've already read proofs. I would think that this model could be a good example of modeling to explain students (a) why the heck we need this modeling, (b) how to combine comprehensive (mechanistic) submodels with empirical ones, (c)why we need powerful computers and software for some models. The model in my opinion is very good as illustration of some important points in modeling. Third, in the "Agriculturasl Systems" 1996, Vol 50, pp. 209-226 and 227-238, we've published a series of 2 articles "An adequate model of photosynthesis. I. Parameterization, validation, and comparison of models" and "An....II. Dependence of parameters on the environmental factors". For three different but very simple, empirical models of photosynthesis the methodology was presented. Perhaps of some use for your purposes. Why don't you try to employ your time working for example, instead of reading what I write? Nosy. -- Larry un@digital.net P.S. Now you see why someone wanted to do this to me -- I am so very obnoxious. But *I* am not the one who began sending messages to *your* list; it was the other way around.

Classifying series of "images" at the pixel level... ("Gommes, Rene (SDRN)" <Rene.Gommes@fao.org>)

Date: Tue, 30 Apr 1996 09:52:00 +0002 From: "Gommes, Rene (SDRN)" <Rene.Gommes@fao.org> Subject: Classifying series of "images" at the pixel level... Did you ever come across the following problem: you have a series of "images" (satellite based NDVI, gridded rainfall...) covering a "season", and you would like to prepare a synthetic description of what happened over time, e.g. in area 1, rains started early, then stopped area 2, the season was normal area 3, rains started late and were followed by 2 dry spells at mid season etc etc The same obviously applies to whatever parameter or set of parameters you want to use for the description of the situation. Below is some information on ADDAPIX, a programme which will classify pixels from a time series of "images" and generate a final "classified" image where pixel values correspond to categories defined by a profile over time. The description below refers to ARTEMIS satellite images, but it can be used as well for any gridded parameter using the IDA format. Again, IDA (Image Display and Analysis) is a FAO/FEWS/USGS package to analyze satellite or other gridded data. It can convert between different formats (including ASCII grids). You can download it from the same site as ADDAPIX from FTP.FAO.ORG directory: FAO/SDRN/ADDAPIX (anonymous login) and FAO/SDRN/IDA42 for IDA Fred Snijders tells me that he will shortly update the site with the new manual, some bug fixes, better French, and some more BNA files. Give it a try!!! R.Gommes ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- Development of a classification programme for zoning and monitoring using ARTEMIS satellite data. Since August 1988, the FAO ARTEMIS system (Africa Real Time Monitoring Information System) has been producing routinely near real-time images for monitoring of rainfall and growing conditions over Africa. For the display and analysis of the images, a small software package, called IDA, has been developed that runs on even very simple microcomputers. Images can be analyzed in sequence, or difference between actual and past images can be made. For a better analysis of the growing conditions over time data can be extracted from the images for selected areas, and plotted. However, using these techniques either the variation in space, or the variation in time can be analyzed. There remains the difficulty to analyze both space and time in an integrated fashion. This is what is intended to be addressed with the development of ADDAPIX, a pixel by pixel classification programme. A test version was developed by S. Griguolo and M. Mazzanti of the University of Venice and its further development is currently supported by FAO, through the ARTEMIS project GCP/INT/578/NET. Using ADDAPIX, the user will be able to aggregate all areas with a similar behavior in time, thereby reducing, for instance, a yearly set of 10-daily images in only one integrated image. This is the zoning application. By using instead difference between each "current" image with a long-term average, ADDAPIX can also be used for monitoring. The programme allows the inspection of the class profile for each individual pixel, and by selecting only certain classes or regions, can the analysis be refined. For instance by separating bi-modal from mono-modal growing seasons. ADDAPIX is fully compatible with the file formats used by IDA The programme is currently released for testing and can be obtained by anonymous FTP from: FTP.FAO.ORG in directory /FAO/SDRN/ADDAPIX, together with a set of sample data. It is expected that ADDAPIX will answer a real need for a more integrated analysis of space and time in the "early warning for food security" application field.
