Thanks for the help so far on ID'ing this thing. I guess grid dipping the tank
is in order this weekend, as well as some general inspection. I did get
a picture of a NRI ad that depicts this rig (It sure looks like the same
thing) and included it in the page located:

http://www.old-radios.com/NRI.html

Hue mentions that it's aQRP 80M rig, with looks possible...more
time under the hood this weekend is in order.

Thanks for the hints so far!

John

Not sure where the "8" went first time....

Not a BA, but used to service BA;s.
Anyone have a schematic for one of these
later model RF generators? It is a lot lighter
than the URM-25, though not as classy...

Gang-

This is fairly important...

In June I moved to California from the farm in Tennessee.

I have a new address out here, and am not going to be looking in on
the jackatak quite as often, so you all will need to re-do the entries
in your address books to reflect the change...

I am reachable at:

listown@nanniandjack.com
or if something goes wrong
w4kh@hotmail.com

I will be changing the addresses on the automated reminders and
information stacks as soon as I have the opportunity.

Thanks for your attention and good behavior.

Let me know how I can help

Hi Everyone -

Been doing some housecleaning and need to recover a few cubic
feet, pass on some goodies and make room for new stuff. Will list these
here before going out to the shark feeding frenzy in the bay:

1) TMC URA-28 Sideband Exciter, looks clean, good tubes, oscillator works
with an xtal in it - that's as far as I got w/o schematic and appropriate
ps. Comes
with a list of pin connections for power supply. Known defects: plastic
dial warped
and has bulb burns, fibre gear nearly stripped (must be a hot rotor), no tags.
Pics up at http://www.widomaker.com/~cswiger/tmc4sale.html Maybe restorable
if you've a parts unit, or serve as a parts donor for another one.
Asking $125 + shipping.

More on the very clean and working S77A ($30) and NC125 ($100) later, lunch
is over!

Hah! Tell me about it, man. I myself made a special trip to Johns Radio
in Leeds in 1994 to pick out my very own RA-17L and have it shipped back
nome. Now I'm crating it for a return journey to the UK for a complete
overhaul by a guy with the knowledge and the tools to do it.

Yes, it will cost the Earth, as you say, but there will soon come a time
when *no one* will be able to provide such service and I hope to be using
the RA-17L well into my dottage.

Right, exactly what I have had to deal with as well. Let me know if I can
help with checking for equivalents.

Yeah, I have FRG-7 as well and while they share the Wadley loop I'm sure
you will agree they are in different classes.

I have a lot of receivers around here and I must say the RA-17L is my hands
down favorite for everything except AM (where the RCA AR-88LF takes the
medal). I also have the SSB (and LF) adapter so I expect it will be my
primary radio when it returns.

Yes! Oh, gawd, that mylar scale is just the absolute end. So great.

>The only weak point of the overall design is the audio output,

Weak Point? Did you say weak point, sir? I'm afraid I may have to ask you
to step outside!

No, but seriously, like many military receivers the RA-17L is intended to
drive a line for the "end user" of the audio while the speaker is just for
the knob twiddler in the receiver room. But this of course you know.
Shall we both keep alert for a proper British valved amplifier to go with
our receivers?

>Antenna connex is UHF, but other connections are weird Brit things.

I suspect this must have been added as mine has the Brit connectors. The
hardest thing to find was the AC connector. The entire saga of my RA-17L
adventure appeared in Electric Radio several issues back if you're interested.

Ah! I could not have said it better myself. Plus you have the pleasure of
observing the *cast aluminum* chassis when you peek under the hood and, for
those of us who live active fantasy lives, the opportunity to wonder about
its past. Several RA-17Ls at Johns still has the "On Her Majesty's
Service" tags attached!

"I see you are impressed by my Wadly loop, my dear. The name is Bond..."

Best of luck with your radio! Please keep us posted as the romance
progresses.

59 Megacycle Meter, 2-420 Mc/s with matchine coils but is MISSING the
100-250 Mc/s coil (so you can't use it with your vintage 2mtr gear :))
In fine working shape, all wrinkle finish intact w/ a couple of small
paint spots. Asking $59. I've two of these, idea was to have one for
parts but decided it would be worth more in someone else's hands.
Nice big meter lets you see the smallest of dips. Can make Xerox
copies of manual which is also a great tutorial on it's many uses.

I have the small Transmatch that is good for about 275 watts (thats INPUT
power to the final amp!) and really love the way these true balanced tuners
work on balanced lines, even though they are for 80-10 meters only. I need
to replace it with the 1 KW model ( that is really about 500 watts antenna
power) and hope someone may have one for me. I would be happy to trade in
the smaller tuner as part payment of course.

I picked up a nice Triplett 630-PL, except the meter needle tends to
stick at the very end of the scale (max deflection). I looked inside
the movement (carefully) but nothing evident.
Any suggestions ?
Failing that, anyone want it for $25 plus UPS ?

Gang:

Finally got to a Ranger II that has been waiting in
my Projects Pile. Question: what is the tube line-up in
the Ranger II? I see most quite similar to the Ranger,
but this has the keying circuit added, plus at least one
more tube than the Ranger, close to the DRIVE control
variable capacitor. So: what tubes go where, (this
one missing most), where are the differences from the
Ranger?

And if anyone has a schematic for the thing which they
can spare, I'd certainly appreciate it. I'll of course
cover copying and mailing costs.

     Thanks!

I don't think so. The manual is not specific on this at all ... until you
read the body of the text where it states "275 watts input power to the
final amplifier." It implies that the 275 watt unit is for rigs up to and
including the Valiant, and the 1 KW unit is for the bigger Johnson rigs.

Others have told me basically the same time. I will try it after careful
tuneup at low power. I have been a little gun shy since hearing it sizzle
inside at 150 watts or so on 80 meters, but maybe that was just dirty
switches that I should be cleaning up. Also, if I still have trouble at
high power I can adjust the impedance of the transformer either up or down
as needed using a transformer to bring either current or voltage into the
range that the tuner can handle.

I can see that the tuner is conservatively built and should be good for
quite a bit of power. The weakness in most tuners (the ones that use
switches to change taps on a coil) is in the switch itself, either arcing
due to high voltage or melting those wimpy wiping contacts at very high
currents. The Johnson matchbox didn't look much more robust in its switch
than others that I have seen fried ... so I was a little worried about
trying higher power.

Thanks for the info.
