Looking for two or three 6D10 compactron tubes
for handbook project. Could also use a socket.
Please contact me if you can make same available.

A longtime SW DXer friend of mine recently bought
something he had in his youth -- a Knight Ocean Hopper.
It hummed pretty badly, and he asked me to fix it...

Well, someone had been there before me. Two of the three
electrolytics had been replaced with modern types, but
someone had subbed an ancient wax paper 30 uF one for
the last. I replaced that with a modern one and also
tie-wrapped a fuseholder in for safety.

The set now hums a little, but not much. It's not
noticeable unless you don't have a station tuned in.
Perhaps this is normal for the set. (Reversing the
plug did make a difference.)

This set had the full set of coils but I only had
a chance to try out three of them. I was tuning around
on the broadcast band coil after I had buttoned the
thing up last night. The sensitivity and (when properly
adjusted) selectivity is amazing. Without half trying
I had very loud signals from all over. But there was a
local station bleeding through everywhere -- so I
disconnected the antenna.

On no antenna, just the non-shielding wooden cabinet,
I was getting WTOP from Washington DC before sunset.
This from Massachusetts. I also copied some 2-
and 3-land SSB stations on 160, as well as the W1AW
bulletin.

Not bad at all! Now I believe the claims in the
Oscillodyne* article about reception with no antenna.

The Ocean Hopper didn't seem spectacular on the
shortwave frequencies, though.
