Don..... This is a very common problem with regen detectors.
The main thing is that you are overcoupled into the detector.
Loosen the antenna coupling or if you don't want to do that
(to keep your conversion process happy), loosen the coupling
between the output of the converter stage and the input of the
regenerator stage. Then all will be fine.

Basic principle: A regenerative detector works best on very low inputs.

If you are into fine playing of details, you might try decreasing
the grid coupling cap on the detector from whatever it probably is
(my guess is 100-500pf) down to maybe 10-20 pf. Also, you might
try increasing the detector grid resistor from 1 meg or so (just
guessing) up to 10 megs or even higher (I sometimes use infinite megs
[no grid resistor and let the leakage currents determine the input
resistance] on things like '01A's). You must be very loosely coupled
to do this. If you can't uncouple easily, drop the grid resistor down
to 50-100K and the input capacitor down to 20pf or so.

p.s. I have been thinking of taking my single bottle regenerator and
single bottle hartley oscillator to the Shelby Hamfest for some
late nite playing off batteries....... If anyone else is going,
bring yer regenerator and hartley along and we will have a januine
     glowbug rallye there.....(:+}}.....
