Hi you Tube types.
Geesh, I thought that I would be able to start buying Greenlee
hole punches at garage sales soon, but you all are trying to
stir this up.. :-).
Oh well, I have been looking through the old handbooks
and found that in QST they used to have QSL sized
QRP rigs. (100 w) or less. I don' think they
actually called them qrp rigs, but
I stored away an article for future use.
Of course the QSL size was the chassis for
the TX only, not the supply too!

One of these years, I'll get back to the tubes,
but I'm still on the transistor fling right now.
Have fun!

Hi gang,

If you've seen my posts on QRP-L, you know I'm always on the lookout for
places and equipment to scounge parts from.

As the owner of a two-way radio shop, I see all kinds of old tube gear
just sitting around gathering dust and being thrown into the dumpster.
With this recent surge in interest in building QRP stuff using tubes, it
got me to thinking what old 2-way gear would be "scroungeable".

The first radios that came to mind for aquiring alot of parts to build a
C.W. transmitter are the General Electric MASTR Professional series
radios. These FM two way radios were manufactured in the 1970's and are
hybrid jobs with solid state receivers and exciters and tube drivers and
finals. The mobile variety have a transistorized 12 Volt switcher type
power supply for the H.V.. There are still quite a number of these old
beasts still in service, but they are rapidly being retired. Alot of
these radios show at the swap meets or are taking up room in two-way
shops but nobody wants them. That's good for you folks who want to build
transmitters with tubes.

In my opinion, the low band (30-50 mHz) versions of the MASTR Pro. show
the best promise for parts for an H.F. CW rig. These units come in two
'flavors', 50 Watts and 100 Watts output. The tubes are pretty nice.
The driver in either radio is a 8106 which is a 9 pin pentode with a
12 volt filament. The final is either a single 7984 (50 Watt radio) or 2
 push-pull 7984s (100 Watt radio) which is a Compactron with a 12 Volt
filament. The 7984 has lots of transconductance and would make good
power on HF even with moderate plate supply. I think that the
combination of these two tubes would make a great little CW rig. The
neat thing about scrounging from the MASTR Pro. is all the other parts
that are there. There are ceramic tubes sockets, ceramic HC-6 type
crystal sockets, various Johnson air trimmers, 1/2 watt resistors, silver
mica capacitors, other air variables, and slug tuned coils, etc. The
power supply has H.V. silicon rectifiers. The 100 Watt radio has a split
stator variable capacitor in the P.A. tank which could be paralleled in
a single ended amplifier to resonate the tank on HF.

There are other models and brands of old tube FM radios that are
scroungable. I'll investigate these and report on them.

So troll the swaps or make friends with you local two-way dealer. You
might be able to con him out of some of those radios for free. Believe
me, he needs the space!

Good luck and good scrounging.

I would like to buy one copy each of ARRL's "Hints and Kinks for the
Radio Amateur," both the 3rd and 4th editions. I want them to be in
very good condition or better (covers intact and not about to fall off,
no missing or torn pages, not marked up, etc.)

Please contact me directly by e-mail.

Thanks.

I recently subscribed to the glowbugs list. Sounds like some interesting
things being discussed but exactly what is the list's charter? An "info
glowgugs" to the listproc returns a blank message.

Just don't want to irritate the list gods...

OK guys,
It's been a few days and all talk. Where is the schematics or the kits
or the parts to get one of these little rigs off the ground. Lets get
over the back slapping and get down to the nitty gritty. (we say those
things here in NJ) I have never seen one and would like to get the
particulars!!!
	Hope someone can help.

Somebody mentioned their rig used a 5Y3 rectifier (can't say who since
I'm trying out some new software and managed to erase -all- the new
messages!) so I took a look in the tube manual -- first time I've
looked at one of those rectifier graphs in anger. Turns out the
numbers reported (from memory) match up very well with the databook.
At 470 Vct (235 per plate) the output of a choke-input filter will be
right around 175V at 30mA, and it will climb up to a little over 300
no-load. So, yep, you did make all those contacts with 5W input!

Also, regarding building rigs on cake pans, I've got a reprint of a
'30s book around here somewhere that shows Joe Radio building a rig on
a cake pan and otherwise messing up the kitchen while the Master of the
Kitchen approaches with a rolling pin in her hand...nothing new under
the sun, eh?

One source is the 60s and early 70s ARRL Handbook. My '72 edition
had a 6T9 single tube xmtr in it; if a 6T9 ever falls in my lap
I'll surely build one.

Another source is a college/university library; they might have
older ham projects books which will contain some easy-to-build
xmtrs.

Another source is our resident Elmer, Boatanchor Bob NA4G. He's
got some early xmtrs in the archives either on here or over on
the BA list. (Bob, where dey be at?)

Hi Gang...

Did a search and found the URL for the PisWeaker's page so here it is...

http://www.localnet.com/~wa1sov/PisWeakers/guidelines_pw.html#We

Lot of stuff to check out here so give her a bleary eyed squint...

We had our local hamfest here in Fairbanks today and it was a bust
trying to find parts for my hollow state rig... Time to call for a catalog
and keep my eyes out at the dumpster for a tube tye tv...

     Take care, and have fun...

Really have enjoyed the comments about qrp tube rigs since I tuned into
this net. Brings back a lot of old memories. For those of you who might
be interested, theres a neat, simple qrp tube transceiver for 80m in the
July 73 QST. I scrounged most parts for this rig about ten years ago.

This group has rekindled the tube spark in my blood again, so I guess I'll
have to break down and finally build this little critter.

Tubes or what have you, this is a notice that the NoGaQRP - North Georgia
QRP - will be holding their fall meeting in Atlanta at the Morrison's
cafeteria on North Druid hills just south of I-85. Beginning at 11 AM,
we like to hear from anyone building rigs, tube or ?? If you have one
you would like to bring, do so. for the show and tell. CU there.
