I am getting closer to starting the xmtr!
Got the boatanchor crystals for 7050 and 3579 kHz this week, plus a
loaned power supply unit for B+, heaters etc. Great little old unit
for QRP with tubes. I am also getting lots of offers on used parts.
So, I think this thing is taking shape guys!

The 6AG7 and a 6L6 are here, and I hope to add some more tubes and
voltage regulators this week as well as some cpas etc.

What is everyone else on GB up to these days???

Seems every message I get from this list has the reply to address as the
original sender instead of the GB list. All my other E-mail lists reply bach
to the list itself. Is this to keep traffic down or what? It would be nice
to see everyones answers reflected through the list. As of now I have to do
a CC:glowbugs@theporch.com to pass my replies messages to everyone. Which of
course I have not done yet.

Can anyone help me find a schematic and/or manual for a Heathkit SG-8
RF Signal Generator.

I have one which is at least partially operational as it puts out a
calibrated rf signal which pretty well checks out on a freq meter. There
is some audio modulation circuitry which I do not understand.

It also generates nostalgia putting out cycles rather than hertz. Not
sure but it probably has condensers instead of capacitors. :-)

I can't recall which list the discussion of CW Crystals going out of
business took place on, so I'll post this on all three lists (BA, GB,
and the new Ham-AM).

From: PHOENIX CRYSTALS
      1714 North Ash St.
      Nevada, Mo. 64772

Phoenix Crystals is commencing the manufacture of crystals targeted
spacifically for the radio amateur market. We plan to have AT-cut
hermetically sealed plated crystals available within the next 30 to 60
days for the various amateur bands. Startup plans are to provide 80,
40 and 30 meter crystals on a 10 to 14 day shipment after receipt of
orders.

Tentative pricing will be approximately $4.95 each in single quanity.
Sealed plated crystals will provide much better quality and long-term
performance than the older FT-243 style crystals, and we plan on making
these available in several holder styles.

I thought I recently saw somebody mention buying FT-243 crystal blanks
cut for just below 40 meters and grinding them up to their frequencies
of choice, but when I looked again I couldn't find the message. Does
anybody know if any manufacturers will sell such blanks? I've got lots
of "useless" FT-243s (and no useful ones :( ), and that sounds like an
interesting way to get a decent assortment. Thoughts? Group buy?
Fantasy?

Good evening group,

Thanks to a most helpful member on the list,
I have a nice porcelin socket and tube coming
for my novice xmtr as well as an original fuse
plug.

I still need a porcelin plate cap, an 8ma (or 10ma)
meter, and an external coaxial antenna realy such
as the old Dow-Key type. If anyone has one of
these in their junk box, please give me a shout
with your requirements or trade needs.

Also, if anyone stumbles across a good
condx HG-10B VFO, please QSO. If it doesn't
drift ( :^)..., call me on the landline !!

HEY! It's a reply from AF4K!

Bob - check in the file manuals.txt
There are many many suppliers of these types of manuals outthere.
Surely someone on the list in that file will have it.

The information you are needing can be found on my Web Site at the
address listed below.

I have a number of unique resources available for amateur radio.

Bob - can I suggest that you switch to using PEGASUS MAIL as your

With this program, you can select the reply address as GLOWBUGS with
the simple click of your mouse, and it goes to the group OR the
original sender or both, whichever you prefer!

Bob, I have an old Heath SG which I still use for my GB projects.
          I think it's an SG-8, but don't see a # on the panel. I believe I
have a book at my other QTH where I'll be over Thanksgiving. If you
haven't found a manual by 11/21, send e-mail to me and I'll make

Message-ID: <Macintosh */PRMD=MOT/ADMD=MOT/C=US/@MHS>

Howdy Folks,
While I don't know of any commercial concerns selling blanks for FT-243s, I
recently found a fairly large quantity of crystal blanks for FT-243s, all in
the forty meter ham band! I have been trying to figure out a fair and
equitable way to make these available.

First, some research on FT-243 crystal holders. The blanks I have are
rectangular in shape, about .5 x .6 inches. In looking through the
collection of FT-243 crystal holders I have, I see FOUR different sytle
holders, each with different style crystal blanks, all marked FT-243. Some
are rectangular, matching the blanks I have. There are two styles that are
square, one about .5 in and another about 3/8 in square. The fourth style I
have seen uses a cartridge style blank with plated on electrodes. So, if
you are interested in replacing the blanks in your crystal holders, check
which type of blank you need.

If you are interested in some blanks for forty meters, drop me a note. The
frequencies I have are spread all across the band, form 7000 to about 7250,
but mostly CW. They are not evenly distributed so I can't hit specific
frequencies but I should have something within about 10 Kc or so, easy
grinding range. I thinking about a buck a blank plus a buck for the postage
and mailer should be reasonable for both sides of this.

Any interest? Any comments? Any more info on ft-243 holders? I have
started trying to correlate manufacturers to blank shape so that, while
scouring the hamfests, I cann pick out the useful holders. If any one wants
to contribute info, I will feed it back for all.

I've had only indifferent luck grinding FT243s, but there's a place called
C&H Sales in CA that sells a "grab bag" of crystals (I forget how many) for
$15. You're right, it's a cheap way to get FT-243 rocks and housings, at
very least. Most of them are FT-243; in fact, many are oversize military
crystals. None in the bag I bought were on the ham bands, but they were
cheap and you could open them up.

I'll try and find their catalog tonight and get the details on this deal.
Thge cost per crystals was about 50 cents, so if you wreck a few it's no big
deal. And "educational"...
