Doug--

If you do sketch out the circuit, I'll be happy to draw it up in Visio for
the group and for electronic distribution. Just let me know and I'll give
you an address to send the sketch to.

Good luck and please do get that rig's circuit together--I have a number of
1625s (and 807s and 837s too) and that's an obvious "next step" up from a
30W 6L6 rig.

Folks,
Now that Bob Keys has secured permission from ARRL to use QST plans I might be allowed
to suggest an early entry to the database. I don't have any facility for scanning but
Bob or someone else might do the honors. You may be familiar with a nice little book
that every glowbugger(no pun intended 8^) should have is Ed Romney's " Fixing Up Nice
Old Radios". Freds father was, evidently, an old time radio man, as is Fred, and he
has a wealth of experience to share. His book is not particularly well organized as
a tutorial but it's full of interesting glowbug stuff and pictures of old radios. Lots
of info on old regens, too. One of the plans in the book Ed says was his fathers fav-
orite two tube regen set and it happens to be a design taken directly from QST. It
seems to be from a late '30s edition. Ed reproduced the QST plans with "Courtesy QST"
appended. This radio uses a 6C6 or 6D6 detector and a 76 audio amp and tunes from 1.2
mc to 4.7mc using 5 coils. It employs screen grid regeneration with a tapped coil
rather than a tickler. Like I said, I don't know which ARRL handbook this came from
but it might be an interesting addition to the plans repository.

Greetings,
This is my first appearance before this group. I've been "reading the mail"
for a couple of weeks and have gathered a huge amount of information from
your past discussions. I had no idea that a group like this existed. I've
been foundering about on my own seeking information on the old 20's and 30's
rigs. I currently have a little 6L6 rig in the works and plans for a bit
more ambitious project following that. Hopefully I'll be on the air as soon
as I get my CW fist back in shape (haven't done any since my novice days).
One question (at least for now!) ........I had some old tubes given to me to
add to my meager collection. One of them is a 1624. Now I've seen 1613's,
14's, and 25's but have no 1624 listed in the information that I have. Can
anyone help me out?
Thanks and 73. Eric KA1YRV

We thinks we is a pretty special group, too.....(:+}}.....
There are a lot of good folks here, and enough common knowledge to rebuild
the finest glowinggespitzensparkenbottleburners, ever designed.....(:+}}.....

Eric.... The 1624 is a tube roughly equivalent to a 1625 or an 807.
It was used in the marine services aboard ship as the oscillator and
driver tube in wwII era Radiomarine and Mackay transmitters. These
are the kind of things that were found in liberty and victory ships,
etc., and used up through about 1960 or a little later. They were
used as the classic marine 50 watt xtal/vfo oscillator/driver stage
to drive a pair of 813's to 200 watts output.

If memory serves me correctly, it is a filamentary beam pentode with
the same ratings as the 1625, but the filament is 6v or something like
that. I can look it up in my Radiomarine manuals tonight if noone else
returns the info. Someone probably has a tube manual handier than me.

Welcome aboard! Grapples ye yer tin cans atops yer noggin, an' readys
ye yer key at the fore!

The 6F8G is also a good choice. It is basically a twin-6J5. In the
late 30s' to 40s' QSTs, this appears in the classic detector-audio
regen. It was available first as ST, then GT shape. With a grid cap,
it has a funky look for a breadboard rig. The 6J5, 6F8G, 6SN7 all are
much the same, with the 6SN7 having greatest power and B+ ratings.

  I am planning a regen around an 8CG7 9 pin (It's free). It's a
clone of the 6SN7 and seems very common and cheap. (70's TV tube)
It's also around in 6.3 VAC and other heater ratings.

Well, maybe I have it all messed up. I am shooting from the hip, here,
and would have to go back and check my manuals, tonight. If it is the
size of an 807 then that is the one I am talking about. If it has a
window top with a phosphor screen for the magic-eye or such, then I
am all wet and need another cold 807 to get me wits straight.

Somewhat puzzled..... Bob/NA4G

Similar others might be:

The 6F5 and 6K5 are also good single triodes, but not too common.

The 6P5 and 6L5 should be pretty close to the 6J5.

The 6BD4 and 6BK4 look like possiblilties.

The 6F8 is a bit scarce in these parts. A similar one is the 6C8.

The 6BX7 and 5964 look like good octal dual triodes, also, as does
the 6BF7 and 6021. The 2B5 looks like a good possibliity for a
filamentary version. A sleeper tube is the 12H4.

In the TV minis, the xAF4 and xAN4 triodes look good.

The point that is surfacing, is that almost any triode or dual triode
will work pretty well in the basic regen detector and audio mode.
Use what you have available, and it will probably work just fine.
Some tubes may be a bit more amenable to certain circuit layouts
or designs, but basically, anything that will oscillate or amplify
will work in the detector and audio stages.

Most tetrodes pentodes will do likewise, although biasing is a little
more critical on tetrodes and pentodes to get them to work well.
You may have to play with screen voltages and regeneration coil taps,
etc, to get them ``right''.

73/ZUT DE NA4G/Bob UP

p.s. Who can come up with the cheapest dime a dozen octal, 7 pin, 9 pin
tubes from the tv era that we should try out for a basic common
      tube type.....hint, hint.....

Don't know about a 6BD4, but the 6BK4 was a HV shunt regulator
tube in early color TVs. Amp factor 2000, max plate volts 27000(sic)
plate current 1.8 ma, and max dissipation of 30 watts.

The high mu is interesting, but I wonder how it would work with
a thousanth of its normal working voltage.

P.S. This is the tube that made all the x-rays in the old TV sets
from those 27KV electrons hitting the plate.

I think the 1626 is the eye tube. Common in the ARC-5 transmitters.

Ahh, now we are at a fundamental crossroads......(:+}}.....

A tv junkoscrappo tube might make a great regen receiver tube.
What else can we do with them thar unwanted orphan televiseotubies.

Someone should survey some of the odd 3/4/9/17 whatever filament volt
tubes that noone can sell anymore and see what might make a good tube
for a typical triode or dual triode regen set. I would suggest that
there are many types of orphan triodes and dual triodes in octal and
7 or 9 pin sizes. We need a list of them for further reference.....

For example, AES lists the 2CY5 tetrode at a buck-fify each. One could
make a tetrode regen detector or tie the grids together and use it as
a triode. These kinds of things are common hamfest orphans.

Almost any mini 9 pin tube that ends in 8 is likely to be a dual triode.
There are some sleepers there worth looking at.

Many 7 pin tubes that end in 4 are triodes, that might be interesting.

Possible octals might be the 6Q7, 6R7, 6SQ7, or 6SR7 with the diodes
unused. The triode sections would work well.

The 7A4, 7B4, or 14A4 triodes would work well, as should the
7/14B6, 7C6, 7/14E6 equivalents to the 6SQ7, 6SR7.

The 7/14AF7 or 7/14N7 would be another good dual triode.

Others keep filling out the list.......

Here is a thought for the day......

Traditionally, commercial regen receivers of class were three-tubers.
Detector, first audio, second audio, all triodes, was the general rule.

Now, if we could find some el cheapo junkotvscrappo tubes that had
2 volt filaments, then we could series three of them to work off a
6 volt battery for filament power. Likewise, if they were 4 volters,
then we could use three of them similarly off a 12 volt battery.
Now that is mil-spec designing, for regen service.....(:+}}.....

There should be some suitable type tubes there somewhere......

At 48 volts, maybe we won't nuke ourselves, too much.....

My guess is that there should be some point at which regeneration
and oscillation would occur, even on low plate voltage. I often use
6080's in Hartley oscillators and regen detctors (sub for 6SN7). That
works fine, and those were vacuum tube pass transistors (regulators).
Sounds like we need some late night experimenting, 'ere.....(:+}}.....

I have used 807's in a test regen detector, and that worked.

The 833 kilowatt broadcast tube works fine in regeneration service (from
experiments done by one of our list members). Heating the filament is
another story, tho.....(:+\\.....

It would seem that proper conditions are feasible at low voltages even
with large power tubes normally run at high voltages.

If anything, the high mu would help to make oscillation easier, I would
think.

Well, I hate to be pedantic, but a minor correction is in order.
Most 9 pin tubes with numbers ending with an 8 are usually triode-
pentode combinations, e.g. 6U8, 6EA8, 6AW8, etc. 9 pin tubes with
numbers type numbers ending in *7* are the dual-triode type, for
example: 12A*7, 6CG7, etc.

One caution: The "series-string" tubes with weird filament voltages weren't
intended for battery service and would put a serious draw on a battery; I
would guess close to half an amp for three tubes continuous, just to light
them up. On second thought, if I remember my TV theory (and I never knew
that much of it) the current through those tubes passes through *all* the
tubes in the string, so the smaller tubes have to pass just as much as the
bigger sweep tube and audio power amp. I wouldn't therefore be surprised if
even a small 7-pin miniature model needed half an amp to light properly.
I'll check on this tonight; never really thought about using these li'l
buggerinos.

The only place this doesn't matter that much is if you're running it off a
*car* battery, which has more oomph than about anything else that stores
power chemically. So definitely 3 of the 4-volt tubes, unless you're still
running a 6-volt vehicle...

Such tubes are *real* cheap. I have a shoebox full of them, and I remember
throwing lots of them away in years past.

Another odd note here: AES sells a socket adapter kit that lets you replace
the 6E5 style magic eye tubes with the cheaper 1629's. The only real
difference is in the basing.

Suggest old series string TV RF amplifer and oscillator tubes:

2AF4, 2BN4, 2GK5

For four volt tubes the only pure triode seems to be 4GK5

but there are lots of dual triodes like 4BQ/K/Z7

and the diode equipped 4AV6

Gang,
Jeff, KG7JF, made an interesting point about series-string
wierd heater voltage tubes. I suspect that the current of these
buggers is probably on the order of 300 mA, just like the typical
AA5 radio heaters. True, the tiny uhf RF amp has the same current
flowing through it as does the horizontal output, but the heater
voltages are way different. The RF amp might be rated for 2 volts
while the H. output is 35V. The heater *power* required for
proper electron emission is determined by the voltage rating, given
that the current is fixed. We see the 2,3,4,5 volt jobbies in the
RF/IF sections of tv's since not that much heater power is required.
