Hi all,
Has anyone tried using an 811A in the basic Hartley circuit? I got the
impression that it isn't a great choice, however it seems to fire up ok in my
test circuit. I only had about 450V on the plate and was a bit skeptical as
to whether it would percolate at all. It just happened to be the only big
triode I have on hand.

Jeff,

I have a copy of VisioHome also. That was how I read your schematic for
the 6AG7/6L6 transmitter. It read your tube symbols and all that
stuff. So, I'd guess that it should work. I do remember though, that
it would only read version 3 of your visio techinical file which
(thankfully) you included.

Just some thoughts,

I am the one who has not had good luckwith the 811A in triode Hartley
oscillator service. I would be curious to know the details of your circuit.

1. coil size, number of turns, and placement of tap.

2. grid bias capacitor and grid blocking condenser values.

3. circuit type, HI-C, LO-C (value of lumped tank tuning capacitance).

4. coupling coil size and inches of coupling.

5. power input and power output.

6. relative stability with keying and with key down (short/long term).

Maybe my 811A's are too down to oscillate well. I only have a pair that
were junkbox pulls, so that could be part of the problem. My tanks are
very HI-C, and normally have about 8-10 turns on 80M, max. Every other
tube I have tried, seems to percolate well, but that crazy pair of 811A's
of mine.......hmm......(:+\\.....

I would appreciate any other's Hartley experiences with the 811A, too.

I bought out a retired ham's stash of RF tubes this weekend. I was "forced"
to take even the stuff I didn't want. I'd like to give youse guys a chance
at these before I go commercial. I have:

-a single Penta 3-500Z, NIB (unopened, dated 1989);
-several 100TH's, test good and look new;
-several 250TH's, test good and look new;
-a bunch of 807's, 6146's, and some metal 6L6's (I have more than I could
ever use);
-lots of rectifiers like 866's, 5Z3's, some 836's;
-lots of other stuff, if you have some "wants".

Anything anyone's interested in?

I currently use Visio 2.0, which is irritating because the Visio
folks decided to completely forsake backwards compatibility. I'm
thinking about the 4.5 upgrade when it's available next year,
since their upgrade pricing is a little more reasonable. I'd
appreciate a copy of your stencil if it's not too inconvenient.
Will it work with Visio Technical 4.0?

My version of Netscape Navigator (3.0) was able to view your Word
file directly, using Inso's free Netscape plugin. Check out

for more details. I bet Bill hates these folks...

Hi Roy,
Here is the scoop on the FT-241 rocks.
This is from the CQ Surplus Conversion Handbook Page 97. It looks like they
lifted the print from somewhere else.

For units marked for channels 0 thru 79 (20-27.9 MHz):
Fcrystal = Fmarked/54
for example Channel 0 or 20 MHz is on 370.370 KHz
            Channel 20 or 22 MHz is on 407.407 KHz
            Channel 46 or 24.6 MHz is on 455.555 KHz
            Channel 79 or 27.9 MHz is on 516.666 KHz
For units marked for channels 270 through 389 (27-38.9 MHz):
Fcrystal = Fmarked/72
for example Channel 27 is on 375 KHz
            Channel 328 is on 455.555 KHz
            Channel 389 is on 540.288 KHz

These were popular for building homebrew SSB/CW filters. I have used them as
single xtal filters in simple HB receivers.

I hope this helps.

In a message dated 96-11-25 11:32:37 EST, you write:

<< is working fairly well, and seems chirp free in my receiver across the
room.
 However, I cannot seem to get the PI tank to resonate worth a dang. I
 am using a 700pf antenna-side variable, a 300pf plate variable, and a
 coil of 38 turns #18, 1.25 inches in diameter, airwound stock >>

Dave a couple of thoughts:

1. Are you sure that you are getting drive to the 6L6? Do you have a means
available to measure the grid current, if so how much? How is the 6L6
biased, are you using the usual grid leak bias?

2. What is the length of your tank coil? knowing that I can calculate the
inductance to see if it is in the ballpark. It seems ok as I visualize it,
but there's no substitute for calculation.

3. With the loading capacitor (700 pf) fully meshed, you should see a
pronounced dip. Make sure that the voltage (including filament) to the 6L6
is off and that the tank circuit is not loaded when looking for a dip with
the gd meter. That should give you a good dip if it is resonant where you
expect. Try sweeping the grid dip around in frequency in case the dip is
higher or lower than where you expect it. Make sure you have close coupling
to the between gd and coil.

4. I assume that you are using the usual shunt fed circuit with an rf choke
and blocking capacitor, make sure they are all good. Maybe try dipping the
tank with this stuff disconnected from it.

hope you find it.

The current edition of Electronic Handbook (Volume 14) has a very nice bread
board
one-tube (3A4) regen radio. It is primarily for BCB use, but it is a good
starting
point for a simple first project using easy to get parts. You can also use
substitute tubes if needed.
