Dave,

Take a look at K9KZT's _New Life for the All-American Five_
in the June '71 issue of QST for ideas. If the rx has a loop
or loopstick antenna, you'll need to change the antenna circuit
a bit. It might be possible to move the front end to 160 with-
out too much fuss.

W5FRS was good copy on 80 here last night, calling cq/ba on
3.575 give or take around 0139Z with 558 sigs (slight "whoop",
sounded good!). Alas, I've no antenna below 30m, else I would
have given 'FRS a shout.

Steve WA5RPF

Hi Steve,

I thought I would through this out for what it is worth to you and a cc: to
the reflector. I am currently using a dipole cut to length for 40M and fed
one third of the total length in from one end with 450 OHM ladder line. I
use a 6:1 balun but a tuner would work as well. The great thing about this
antenna is that it will tune up with my TS-830 on 40, 20, and 10M. I plan
to lengthen it to 80M soon. Since this should also work for fairly well for
15 and 30M meters I hope eventually fot have two antennas which cover 80,
40, 30, 20, 15, and 10M with no need for a tuner.

Hi guys - still at it occasionally here with 4 watts out to a G5RV
from the ol' 6L6 homebrew rig here.
Today I raised N1PVP in Carver, R.I. on 7050 kHz and
then got hooked up with KA1WIU in N. Scituate, R.I. also on 7050 kHz
This darn thing WORKS!
The band is fading fast now. I just want to make ONE night time QSO
with this thing!
Will some of you listen out for me? I will try to check in to the
nets later on.

So Steve - what bands do you work for the most part?
Are you on 30m or 20m CW at all?

OK Guys,

I need some help. This is slightly off topic but old parts is old parts,
right?? I have an old Henry 2M mobile rig which has a massive steel
microphone with a coiled cord. The wire a larger diameter than most of the
mics you see now days (probably similar to many late 50's early 60's rigs)
and I would like to use the same type as a replacement. Does anyone know
of a supplier that might have this older style of cable.

Yes. Belden makes a variety of coiled cords in lengths from 3 ft to
10 ft, with various wire combinations. Some of them are quite large in
diameter, and I suspect they probably make one to repair your unit.
I've replaced several cords on various mikes around the TV station where
I work.

For all of you that are out there looking for somthing to
light the night with, look in QST Oct 1968 pp 22. Its two tubes
runs 12 watts, 6C4--5763, Pi Net, with C.W. side tone. I put one
of these on the air years ago.

Jeff,

The guy may be beyond hope.

He lives near me, and I offered to test his tubes AND loan him a straight
key. I have a nice J-38 in mind - THAT'll spoil him!

But he didn't show up. I think he was too busy on the air with Connecticut
to drop over. Maybe he'll come out of the cellar when he wears out those
alligator clips!

I'll bet a compactron that if you run your receiver with a 6-inch antenna
and AGC OFF, the trouble will go away. (It's the receiver agc mucking up
your tone!)

Food for thought.....

Sometimes a T-8 signal that has power supply problems can be cured by
removing excess capacity from the power supply filter or by loading
the power supply down with a series resistor load (some 7.5 watt to
15 watt lamps at about 75 volts per lamp do wonders).

The excess capacity causes an overly-long time constant that sounds like a
long slow chirp when keyed. You can load the power supply down with lamps
or resistors to reduce the time excursion change in B+ or you can remove
capacity from the filter so that the time constant is so quick that the
chirp time constant becomes more like soft keying. I use this latter
technique on Hartleys and it works great. Somewhere between 4ufd and
8ufd works best in my hands. You play a game with trying to reduce the
AC hum modulation vs trying to reduce the chirp time constant.

Well, I hope ye all were well fed this fine weekend. The band was mixed,
but conditions were fair to mittlin'. I was running the QRP ArcusFivus
and Grandma Hartley much of the time, and was not heard very well. For
the fun of it I even snuck in ol' Behemothus BCus-375us, a time or two.
I did fire up Big Bertha Radiomarine, occasionally, and she has no
trouble being heard.....(:+}}..... It seems we have been diverging out
from the appointed QRG of 3579R545, or else my R-388 and ricenboxen freq
meters are off. I have had nil luck on 40, so mostly inhabit 80. Let us
try to snuggle as close to 3579.545 as we can, to keep from getting close
to mama on W1AW or down into the traffic nets below us. I heard the
west coast folks, QSA 2, but was unable to QSO them on the qrp rigs.
I am often unable to get aboard early in the watch around 0200Z but I am
glad folks are firing away there, and that the QRG is well supplied with
Boatanchors and Glowbugs from 0200-0600Z, most any nite! We have even
had some lurkers passing by that are not on-line BA/GB folks, but did
fire up their whatzitbottleburneries, and signed aboard. Apparently, we
has some notoriety out and about tha bands! See ye on watch!
