The mighty MicaMold XTR -1 (love that name!) with its
firebreathing 14 watt 6L6 output will be holding forth on the
3.579 colorburst freq tonight. Love monitoring the CW with
the built in purple glow of the 80 rectifier on on its open chassis.

We'll be looking to snag it's first QSO in who-knows-how
long today, if anyone's interested. Fire up that Mack, or Eby and
meet me there!

Any interest in photos of this and some of the other junque around
here? If so, I'll take some and put 'em in my page...

        Best 73!

Dear Maty,
Back on November 6th, you, on the behalf of the ARRL, graciously gave our
internet "Glowbugs" group permission to make a few copies of select historical
technical articles from early QST magazines (ref: attached Email below from
yourself to Robert Keys, NA4G on 11/6/96). Since that time, interest and
excitement has grown in our group about constructing some modern day versions
of the simple 40s/50/60s style transmitters and receivers as depicted in
the period QST magazines and "The Radio Amateur's Handbooks".

Many in our group have wanted to share their favorite tube gear construction
articles and schematics from issues of QST and the "Handbook" with others
within the group. With the relative rarety of some of these issues and books
it is essential that we pool our archive resources to further our charter
(ie., the building/testing/learning about early receivers and transmitters).

After reviewing the initial grant of permission that you extended our group
last month, I thought it would be appropriate to formally request expansion
of that permission to include various tube gear construction articles and
schematics from later editions of QST and add permission to include
construction articles and schematics from the "Handbook". In each case, we
would have the proper "reprinted with permission from [issue date] QST
(or Handbook)".

Again, thank you for the initial grant of permission, and consideration of
our request.

Sincerely,
Paul F. Carreiro, N6EV

Good evening BA, glowbug and VSS fans:
It's time for "Larry's fifth day of
Christmas," part five of a 12 part giveaway between now and Christmas.
Tonight I'm posting this to "glowbugs" and "VSS," as well as BA
because some of this junk, (errr, *Great Stuff*) might come in
handy to my QRP builder, and vintage sand-state friends too.

So without further ado...
Welcome to Larry's "Fifth Day of Christmas" free stuff giveaway.
Tonight for your perusal, the following items are available
free to good BA, VSS, or glowbugs homes. You get to pay the shipping.

Lot One:
New EBY ceramic HC-6U crystal sockets. Perfect for that glowbug or restoration project.
I still have some of these, one or two per request while they last.

Lot Two:
Stack of nice silk screened LM-317 (TO-3) varible output
power supply PCB's. With the right parts and a heat sink good for
up to 5 amps DC. Great for power supply builders, or regulated DC
on your firebottle filiments. About 2.5 X 2.9 inches, everything
but the transformer goes on the board. These are raw PCB's only,
(no components on board.) While they last.
(I still have a stack of these folks, lets move em out! :-)

Lot Three:
Some assorted crystal sockets for *OLD* crystals. These are quite a
bit larger than the FT-243 type. Not sure what the holder would be
called.

Lot Four: (only new item tonight)
One each old headphone set, needs tender loving care.
Western Electric type TTS-3 (509).
Complete, W/connector, no mods, might be "correct" for
vintage set half as old as the rockies! I have no idea what
these match, but if you own it, I expect you will...

Thats going to do it for now, Keep your eyes open for parts
Six to twelve as we march towards the Christmas season...
Hey, it sure beats throwing this stuff out! <grin>

Winners will be determined by:
1) Tell me why you need/want them, points awarded for:
  a) Repairing or building a firebottle, or VSS rig.
  b) Needing them to complete a project.
  c) Looking for someone your "Elmer-ing"
  d) For old manuals/documents owning the radio or whatever.
  e) *Making up an outrageous story of what you will use them for. :-)
         * For item "d" the taller and more unbelievable the better...
Storys about Murphy, bad luck, Area 51, or how Murphy escaping
from Area 51 is bad luck, are always good for extra points.

2) Bonus points to anyone who has sent me a manual, helped
me find a part, or provided advice, (good or bad, it's the effort that
counts. :-) or sold me something at a reasonable price.

3) Double bonus points to anyone who has posted thoughtful technical
comments to one of the lists recently. I'm not that thoughtful
a person myself, but I learn a lot from reading.. :-)

Winners will be determined any darn way I feel like.
Judges decision is final. (Although open to bribes :-)

Hi everyone,

Well after struggling, cursing, throwing things against the wall
(nothing important, though) and generally being frustrated, I finally
got my HW-16 on the air. This afternoon I worked Bry/AF4K and then
Don/VE9XX on 3579. What a rush!

The rig still needs some work, but it seems ok to put on the air. I
still have to replace the 15k PWR LVL pot, but that's gonna mean
removing the front panel. (it sits 1/4" away from L-11 and won't come
out otherwise.

Now for a question. The sidetone on this baby is absolutely horrible
and way too loud. I know nothing can be done about the tone, but I'd
rather not listen to it if I don't have to. I replaced the 500k R-63
with a 1 meg resistor per Heathkit, but I'd like to know if I can use a
higher value to bring the level down a LOT more. Has anyone done this,
and what value resistor would you recommend? I could just play with it,
but the foil on that PC board looks a little shaky. Any advice would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who provided advice/encouragement/whatever. Now all
I have to do is finish up the SB-301/401 pair.

I just want to express my thanks and deepest appreciation
for the efforts of those courageous souls who lit up the
80-meter BA freq on the evening of December 7.

I've never before had so much fun sharpening my meager
CW copying skills. Many times I simply couldn't stop laughing
at the "chirpy" (and worse: all calls omitted to protect
the guilty) signals. In fact, I missed "Mission Impossible"
on the satellite because this was much more fun.

You may be sure that my Hartley construction program will
be accelerated. If I'd known I could have signals like
those, I'd have done it much sooner!

Keep it up, folks; the world needs us.......

Message-ID: <199612090224.SAA18824@netcom23.netcom.com>

Having been bummed out by the typical "hookup wire"
sold by RS and other outlets (having only a 300-volt
rating), I was pleased to see, at my local hardware
store, 18-ga TNN electrical wire. All right, 18-ga
is a bit thick, but TNN wire is rated at 600 volts
(and is also oil/gasoline resistant!). It is stranded
unplated copper wire and is available in several colors
at 7 cents per foot. I'm using it for all the transmitter
	projects!

Some time ago, I was bemoaning the lack of the old metal
dial plates one got in the package when one bought a pot
(you got a knob, also). So imagine my joy when the new
Allied catalog arrived and, behold, two potmakers are offering
	these plates in several sizes!

In the interest of more realistic rigs.......

Hello fellow Glowbugs..
I thought a small note of explaination regarding my earlier Reprint Permission
post is in order. I took a second look at the permission originally given by
the ARRL and felt it needed to be expanded to include the ARRL Handbooks and
later versions of QST. We have some articles and schematics from various
handbooks that we'd like to put up on the WWW site. I just wanted to cover
our backsides before the items when up. That post, was sent to the person
at the ARRL who originally gave the permission.. and was CC'd to this list
and a few other individuals.

If you havn't found it yet, check out http://www.barepower.net/~carreiro/
and follow the links to the Glowbugs page.

If you have anything you'd like to have posted on the page, please email me.
Also, if you have spotted articles of interest that are not in the linked
bibliography pages, please send them too. I've found alot of nice designs
in the 50's/60's handbooks, but my collection is rather limited.

Another request regarding the bibliography... I've tried to describe the
design depicted in the article with the tubes used, and power supply
requirements. Is there any other characteristic that I should be including
with the critique of the design that would be helpful to those searching
for a design? Please email your thoughts.

Thanks.. 73
