Doug,

Here's a very useful source for meters and such - very helpful guy, will
correspond by e-mail, and can now take visa (via fax). Do not be afraid to
deal in canada - worked fine for me.

OOPS, I jsut tried it and the following site no longer works:

Don Busick, K5AAD, has hundreds of panel meters left over from the closing
of Madison Electronics. Most are NOS (in original boxes), some are
surplus, and some are antiques. Don's address is

Hello Peter - maybe we can work YET on the GB frequencies when condx
permit!

BTW - I HEARD some of those chinese portable stations last night.
Sandy W5TVW was on from Red China as W5TVW/BA but I couldn't get him
to hear my little 4 watt GB!

Gee, I wonder what an American would have to do to get one of
those BA calls? I think I'll write to the Chinese Embassy.

Madison Electronics? Yeah I remember that place very well. Missed it when
the place finally closed as so many other Houston customers did. No place
like it that I know of anymore. Just ham radio swap meets now...

Gang,
As a newbie, I want to thank all of you who answered my questions and
have offered to help. I am quite excited about building a 6L6 trans-mit
ter. I am going to try to assemble the parts that I need.
Since the Feast of Christmas is almost upon us, I will have to wait til
after the New Year to start in earnest.
Again, my thanks and a Blessed Christmass to one and all

I wonder if I could pick the brains of all those improvisers out there,
   once again.

I'm scavenging filter capacitors for a 6L6 one-tuber power supply.
I like to dig things up locally, and cheap, if possible.

I have access to a local outlet that sells surplus electronics
which is mostly of an industrial nature. There are high voltage
capacitors which are in the 25 to 50 uF / 350 VAC range.

The AC rating is because they are motor-start units. Some are
sealed cylindrical metal units, much larger than conventional
axial-lead electrolytics of similar value (marked: liquid-filled -
No PCBs). The terminals are both at one end, covered with the usual
little rubber boot. Would these be oil-filled units? Would they
be suitable for use in a simple 300VDC, one-tuber cw transmitter power
supply? They will fit in my project okay.

The other units are in a bakelite-like plastic cylinder, closed off at
one end, with terminals at the other. These are smaller, for the same
value, than the liquid-filled metal units, but still larger than the
conventional axial-lead electrolytics of similar value. These are
also non-polarized with AC ratings. Are these electrolytic units,
with two polarized caps in series-opposing connection inside? If
so, are these caps unsuitable for filtering pulsating DC in a power
supply, because 1/2 of each unit would be continuously reverse-
   polarized?

I'm sure that someone out there has figured all this out before.
I would very much appreciate the benefit of your experience.

Much of the fun for me is in the scrounging. These caps are much
cheaper than what is available from the electronics wholesaler here.

   So, will either type work?

   Thanks again for any help.

   Regards,
   Shane Wilcox

There's been a lot of talk about motor start caps on one hifi list I get lately.
Here's a summary:

1) motor start capacitors make fine filter caps.

2) some golden eared tube amplifier builders prefer them above all else

3) they will withstand DC of at least 1.4 times the AC rating and last forever

4) they are built of non-polarized film materials

One manufacturer's design engineer is reported to have laughed at the
question "Can I run them in DC filter service at the rated AC voltage?" He
went on to explain that they are tested at 2 or 2.5 times the ac rating for
some hundreds of hours and that the expected failure rate is less than one
in 100,000 units.

If I were you, I'd buy all I could use, and then have fun!!!

Yikes! Here I've got a milk jug full of motor start caps and never dared
try them in filter service!

Anyway, what's worth pointing out is that many of the "industrial surplus"
catalogs like C&H Sales (we dicussed them here a month or two ago) sell
motor start caps, even if they don't sell much of anything else of interest
at RF.

Gotta give this a shot.
