   Hello,

Many thanks for all of the replies that I received. It certainly
   was food for thought.

Before all of the info was in, I went ahead and built a power supply,
   using the less-favored plastic-cased caps.

   As Follows:

     Hammond 300-0-300 VDC trafo (hefty)
     Hammond 3H/200mA choke
     5Y3GT rectifier
     40uF/330VAC motor-start caps (plastic)-(2)
     PI configuration
Power resistor loaded - first at 20 mA (400VDC out) then 84mA (370VDC
                             out)

    Results:

Smoke Test - nothing observed (hiding behind scrap of plywood :-) ).
Output - stable, no ripple that I can measure with RS digital meter.
Cap Distress - none. no heat. no cracks. no reactions at all.
Length of Test - 2 minutes each measuring session. (one hour test
                     to follow)

I invite your comments and observations. I'm still a little wary of
these things, based on some replys.

    Thanks again,
    Shane Wilcox

I have a question regarding crystals.
Can you use a type HC49U crystal with these tube type rigs ?
I am building the 6T9 Xmtr and dont have any FT243's to use.
I'm thinking of Installing an HC49U crystal into an old FT243 case so it
will look like one and I can use the socket to change bands.

Hello to all,
I need the power plug for a Heathkit HP-23C power supply.
Looks like a 11pin tube socket.
Also looks like the AC power is switched from the socket, which pins
are for the AC switch? One pin is marked "AC SW". What other pin to
does it connect to close the circuit?

Thanks and happy holidays,

Jake, Just happens I am building a Heath HX1681 CW transmitter which uses
the HP-23C power supply and have the schematic for the transmitter right
here. It shows the ac switching pins on the transmitter receptical to be
pins 9 and 10 which are at nine o'clock and 10 o'clock positions
respectively (rear view). This is with the key slot pointing up toward the
12 o'clock position. So -- *IF* there is no cross-over in the cable (I
can't verify this as the powersupply plug is pre-assembled to the cable)
then ----
well, draw your own conclusion.

No, you can't have my power supply plug. I will need it, I hope.

Thanks for the info I'm busy with my 6T9 Xmtr maybe I'll have it done

You can use any size fundamental xtal that will plug in and play.
As long as the rf current through the xtal is limited to a sufficiently
low value to prevent xtal fracture, you are fine. I am using one
of the radio shack 3579.545 rocks in a tiny little size on the HW-16
and it seems to do fine.

>From my own experience, I would guess a Clegg 99er or 66er (slightly more
powerful) could be made to resonate and load at 49Mhz, designed as they were
for 50-54 Mhz. If I had a crystal to multiply to 49Mhz I'd give it a shot
into the B&W but I don't think I have such a crystal in the box. The 66er
is a fine machine; wish I hadn't sold the one I had years ago. 2E26 final,
puts out 8W with a good crystal and everything else in order.

Doubtless people on this list or boatanchors would be the best first place
to go to find a radio like that.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

Jake--

I had one of those years ago and I seem to recall that the 11-pin socket is
identical to that used for 11-pin relays. This may or may not help, but
there's an outside chance one of the industrial surplus catalogs carries
them. (That tickles a neuron somewhere.) I may have such a relay socket in
the junkbox and if I do I'll send it to you. It may not be the same but as
I don't have any 11 pin relays you might as well have the socket.

Send me a land address and I'll dig in the box tonight.
