Someone on BA list asked about the availability of Octal plug sokets
and cases to add modifications. While looking in the Allied catalog
to find 11 Pin sockets for someone for a Heath P/S, I found the
desired things. They are a square piece of metal with an octal socket
and a plastic cover about 1.5 to 2 inches.

The 11 pin sockets I found all are rather big with screw terminals.
It will work, but it will be big and hard to insulate.

Oops!! They are an octal *plug* mounted on a square metal piece, not
a socket as I said in the first post.

I have a rig that uses some strange 250 v fuses (the ones that are about
1-1/2 inches long and 3/8 inch in diameter). I need fuses in 1,2,3,5,6,10,
and 15 amp sizes in this medium cartridge format. Alas, the companies that
used to make them are no-longer making them, and what few that are around
are in 1/5/10/15 amp sizes. I was looking through the junque box and
stumbled across a 2 amp 250v circuit breaker that mounts on a 3/8 hole
and is about the size of a normal fuze holder. I am wondering if anyone
has any sources for these odd circuit breakers, and has anyone used them
to replace odd fuses that are not easily obtained, anymore?

Yeah - actually Bob those circuit breakers will do fine.
We used to use them for repairing amps and organs that would blow
fuses. After you replace the power xfmr or electrolytics and/or
rectumfiers - then you would retest with the braker in place of a
fuse. Saves wasting a lot of fuses if'n she's still inclined to blow
'em!

Hi gang,

In addition to the transmitter I have just begun (1967 Handbook,
'Four Band Fifty Watter' to build in an old SB-xxx box, I am
gearing up to build the matching receiver I have always wanted
to try.

The design I am using is the 'Super-SimpleX Mark II' from the '63 Handbook.
It is very simple, using only 4 tubes, but I have never built any
kind of receiver at all, and don't want to start too big.

My questions?

1. Has anyone here ever built it? Or familiar with it?

2. Could anyone who knows receivers fairly well, and also has a copy
of the Handbook to look at, email me? I have some questions about
whether I should use this as a 'first' receiver project (I really
want something basically useable, but not a regen). My questions
pertain to the IF filter and front end and such.

Many thanks to anyone who can help out...

73's and Merry Christmas

I'm at my Nevada QTH for 3 weeks using my mom's email account so ignore
the name above.

I've got a copy of William Orr (W6SAI)'s BEAM ANTENNA HANDBOOK for $5
if anyone is interested. It's from 1965; very thorough theory of beams;
very good condition.

I also want to recommend the following book to all those interested in
maritime radio history: QTC - A SEAGOING RADIO OFFICER'S SCRAPBOOK,
by Ray Redwood. Lots of neat old photos of shore and shipboard stations.
One chapter is devoted to a minute-by-minute account of the Titanic
disaster, including all the radio transmissions. He includes a lot of
"what if'' footnotes.

You have to write directly to him to get a copy (he autographed mine!).
Write to Sequoia press, 2502 Cockburn, Austin TX 78745, and enclose
$10.95 for soft cover, $17 for hard. Published in 1989. Worth every
penny. His call is KA5HCX.

Hi gang,

I just posted a question and this nice fellow responded along with the
others. While I don't have anything that can help him out, maybe some
one in our group does.

Merry Christmas all, and hope someone can help ol' Lee out here

Hi Bob and the crew, I think those sound like type AGU fuses and they
are still available through some mobile radio dealers. I just bought a
bunch a while back...15's and 30 amp as that's what I use here for my
12v power distribution panel. So, that might give you a lead...good
luck.

John,

This sounds like a very sensible way to go about things. The
difficulty might be in getting mechanical and electrical stability, but
I can already see in my mind's eye the separate circuit elements you
describe mounted on parallel mini-boxes, perhaps with sheet aluminum
shielding "walls" in between, all behind a front panel which has the
tuning cap(s) and other controls permanently mounted. The more I think
about it the more I like it!

Hi gang,

My two year old daughter has accepted as a fact of life that many of
the things she wants (cars, razors, more dessert...) she can only have
"when you get bigger". She was in my office a few days ago and for the
first time she noticed a few tube projects I've got sitting on a table,
so after I told her those were daddy's radios and daddy's tubes she
asked me "I can have my radio tubes when I get bigger?" Gonna have to
cultivate that!

Seriously, anybody have success in getting transistor-era kids
interested in tubes? Or, any of said transistor-era folks here on the
list to tell their stories?

Mike, KK6GM
