Hello gang,

Seems like the more info I collect the strange the puzzles become. I just
acquired a 6080 tube in piece of surplus gear and haven't found it in my
tube lists yet. Anybody know right off the top of their head what it is? I
don't need specs or anything at the moment, just a general idea of what it is.

Hi Bob and the list,
The 6080 is a big triode used mostly for power supply regulation. It is very
similar to the 6AS7.

Mike,

Wel,, my 6-year-old daughter has been somewhat interested in my radios for
some time. When she was three, my father-in-law gave her a car along with
a "driver's license" with her picture on it. She came running into my
shack with the license saying that she could now talk on my radios since
she had a license.

She does like tubes. I brought a couple hundred tubes back from a recent
swapfest and she saw them and said "Cool!" When I brought home an R390A
some time back, I had my wife and daughter come out to the truck before I
unloaded and take a look at my prize. My wife said "That's it?", while my
daughter said "Cool! Can I tune it?"

She's on the right track.

A happy holiday season to all.

Some still are mic'ing to a Champ. Matter of fact, as a final project in

my Radio Broadcasting course some 6 years ago, I mixed a song that
used a Champ. I could have just stuck a "line out" cord to the 24 track
mixing board to record the amp, but instead I put a cardiod microphone
right on the front grille of the amp and lo-n-behold!...

 WHAT A SWEET SOUND!

All that aside.... I am 26 years old, and I grew up around HAM radio, as
my OM has been a HAM for over 30 years. He still tinkers with tube
projects, and even has occasion to read some of the posts on this SIG.

I would ask him "What is a ....?" or "What do those things do?", and he
said, "Do you want to build a tube type radio set?, I will show you how!,
then you will get a feel for what it was like back in the GOOD 'OL DAYS".

The GLOWBUG bit, and the virus is spreading, no known cure has been
found as of yet, except that there are positive side effects.... :)

In looking in my newly acquired 1954 handbook, I found a circuit for
what appears to be a very easy to build but stable 2-tube 2-watt VFO.
I plan on building one into my current transmitter project (1967 'Four
Band Fifty Watter').

They give coil info for 160, 80, and 40 meter fundamental output. since
the transmitter will have a multiplier stage (bandswitched osc. output),
I should be able to build the 80 meter version and multiply up from there,
right? Or should I build the 160 version to maximize stability and drift
factors?

Which would give the best output when multiplied? I don't think I could
ever get a stable VFO if I tried to bandswitch the coils.

Thanks for your input!

Hi Dave...well, two cents worth of really cheap advice...I'd go for the
160 meter version. It's gonna be a bunch easier to compensate and you
just might catch the bug for that band in the future...who knows? Also,
unless you are tied to that design, consider the 6U8 triode/pentode
for a nice, stable VFO/Buffer. They are easy to get, work very well and
dont take much voltage for operation. I built one years ago in a small
butter tin, mounted the whole works on rubber shock mounts from a WWII
Dynamotor and tuned it with a string drive so as not to impede the
shock mounting system. It was a challenge to stabilize, but a handfull
of NPO caps and some time later, it came in like a champ. I started
out with a couple #47 pilot bulbs in the enclosure that ran all the
time, but found out that when properly compensated, I didnt need them...
and, it was a pain to have to open the can up to change the little
buggers.

Just a thought...Merry Christmas

Hi Tony...just a consideration. When you get 4-8 tubes like the 807's
operating in paralell, the plate load impedence gets so low that it's
difficult to find output network parts that will allow a decent match
to a low impedence antenna. That's sure not to say it cant be done,
but it might be less hassle to opt for say....a pair of 813's or so,
or maybe an 833. Also, you wont be looking for a plate supply that
is needed to come up with an amp and a half at 700 volts. But, I dont
know your situation for sure....so just a thought.

Limerick...hmmmmm. I'm 3rd generation from Dublin and County Cork...
interesting. One day I'm gonna visit the "old sod" just to touch it.
Until then, I'll just look at the Web Pages and dream. Montana is a
long way from Ireland.

Bob, It's a low mu twin power triode used asa regulator tube in dc power

Fellow BottleHeaters,

I've just completed a 6L6 one tube xmtr from plans in file 1TPI.JPG. It
worked and tuned on the first try!!!!! No cut and try of coil or
capacitors, also was liberal in parts substitutions. With 330 VDC key down,
I measure it runs 8 watts input. Power suupply is a 5Y3 through
choke/condenser filter. Found an old chassis at a local hamfest, stripped
it and used the terminal strips, sockets, etc. Using it through a real
Johnson Matchbox to a long wire. 80 seems like a good band, but no way can
I make a contact before 7:30 PM local time, even though I hear others. W1AW
seems to always be there. The rig is somewhat sensitive to crystal
"quality/size". The tiny 3579 rock seems to pull freq just a bit, but not
bad. An old FT-243 case 3583 rock sounds first class though. Yesterday I
tapped the coil for 40, but with only rocks for 7100 and 7075 its been a
bust so far. I've tried some different tubes like 6V6/6F6/6K6/6W6. The 6V6
seems a bit more stable, but overall the prsent circuit seems to like to 6L6
the best. Running almost QRP on 80 has been just a lot of fun. You really
get to know the intricacies of the 80 mtr propagation when you listen and
have to be in the right place in the right time. Thanks to all who helped
me in any way, especially with diagrams and articles both on the INET and
mail. Be glad to help you in anyway I can.

I wish some company would market a tube kit commercially--------

Hi gang,

I just posted a request to all the usual newsgroups, and now I'm asking here.
Does anyone have any B&W 3012 stock? It's 32 tpi 3/4 inches in diameter.
I need two lengths of the stuff.

I'm building the 'SuperSimpleX MarkII' receiver in the '63 Handbook, and I
really want to try to find the original stock. The coils are pretty
interlinked and I don't trust my skills enough to homebrew them and still
get them on frequency. Plus, I have never built a receiver before and I
want the best odds for success.

Oh, another thing - I just answered a CQ on 40 meters CW with a 4-zone
call sign. I was very amazed my 45 watt DX-40 with HA-5 VFO and Drake
2C receiver could pull it off.

Then the guy said he was in Gaithersburg, MD. Hmmm... then he said
his name was Bry.... hmmm... AF4K? hmmm.... sounds somehow familiar...

Ended the QSO still wondering, until I looked here and saw it was
Bry Carling, of course!

Small world, isn't it?

Earlier this year I built a linear amp using four 807's. Intended to
use with my C.E. 20-A. It works just fine. Be glad to share the info if
you send me your address. I'll be back at copy facilities (work)

Reading the mail, so don't usually say much! Thought about getting
the AOR DDS-2 I think it is, for the S-line. It's a solid state VFO

about the noise floor article in ER. Listening to my KWM-2A, I find
that I can hear what others can't.... They allege that they are using

crystal oscillators are the way to go. We knew that in 1960!

The latest ER article on 40 years of "progress" is interesting if you
can get ahold of one... Seems that the modern Japanese radios have a
noise floor of about -130. (Dec. QST review confirms this).....
The R-390/A has a noise floor of about -145. Hmmm.... which would I
     rather have????
