Fellow BottleHeaters,

I acquired a Meissner Signal Shifter model 9-1090. It oscillates great in
VFO mode but refuses to oscillate witha crystal. I have a schematic, but it
shows a modification was made to the grid of th 6V6 oscillator. Might
anyone have an original schematic so i can see the way it started life?

Also the 6L6 single tuber continues to delight, even found that a small case
1.843 crystal for 50 cents will double to 80 meter novice band but with
slightly reduced output. So far 7 states/provinces worked!!

Subject: Doing a QSO with a Breadboard tube rig
Message-ID: <m0vcMNV-000iFnC@gpu2.westonia.com>

I had a good qso last night on 80 Meters with Bob, AA2YV, in Rochester NY
(are you part of this group Bob ? Didn't have time to ask you). My own QTH
is Toronto, so Bob is due south of here on the other side of Lake Ontario,
which is about 75 miles distant.

Bob was running a single tube bread board CW rig with 10 Watts output to a
longwire. I believe it was a 35W4 power tube. The QSO was quite a bit of
fun, and I also noticed a few things that I would like to throw out for
discussion here, if there is any interest.

The thing that I found interesting about the signal that Bob was sending was
that even when it dropped down in strength due to the QSB it was still
easier to copy than with many modern rigs. Now, it was not until we got past
the RST/NAME/QTH ritual that he told me what kind of rig he had, and even
before he did I somehow felt that it had to be a tube rig of some sort
because it just sounded "warmer". I've also worked a number of stations in
upper New York state with more modern rigs and they did not have as much
punch as Bob's signal, even though he was running much less power.

The propagation that night was not all that good; Heavy QSB with QRN.
Atmospherics were not all that good either. As a general test for how the
low bands will measure up I generally check against some Buffalo NY BCB AM
stations, and they were not all that clear that evening. Generally if they
boom in, so will 160/80 meter DX, and this was certainly not the case.

Now given all this, I realize that there is always a subjective element with
all such opinions, but still like to know if others have found this as well
in working either other tube based QRP stations, or even "boat anchor" rigs.

Small point here, my main (non-qrp) rig is a Uniden 2020 that uses twin 6416
finals driven by a 12BY7A. I have generaly got good comments on my signal
quality, and have generaly attributed it to the tube based finals.

73's and the best of the season to all.

Hi gang,

After sitting in freeway-construction traffic for almost an hour today
in order to remedy a problem with my wife's Christmas present I was
rewarded when I stopped in a used-book store and found a nice copy of
"Syntony and Spark -- The Origins of Radio". This is a recent book
(1976, 1985) which I have occasionally heard mentioned, and after a
short perusal I can tell you it looks fascinating. It focuses on
Hertz, Lodge and Marconi and their efforts. I had a pretty good idea
what Hertz and Marconi did, but I didn't know anything to speak of
about Lodge (he was one of the first proponents of syntony, tuning both
the transmitter and receiver to a given wavelength, and was awarded the
first patent for such). Looks like 300+ pages of very interesting
reading, with a good deal of technical meat. Of course, this was all
before tubes, but I understand those 15,000 volt spark rigs had quite a
glow of their own.

BTW, am I the only person in the world who thinks it would have been
incredibly interesting to sit in the back of Hertz' lecture hall (or
maybe near the famous iron stove) while he performed his revolutionary
experiments?

73 and a very Merry Christmas to you all,

Mike, KK6GM

Imagine TWO Twin Reverbs converted to 160m AM !

One as the exciter / power amp with TWO 6L6GCs modulated by the other
amp! (Jus' kidding!) - Jeepers, maybe we could even get CLAPTON top
make a guest appearance and tell us how he got the inspiration for
that great song out now: "Change the world." For a guitarist, he
sings well!

Steve - hi and WELL DONE!
I have a 6AG7-6L6 combo running with about 250V on the plate.
I can get 4 watts output on 7050 with a rock. I can only get 2 watts
out on 3579 for some reason. Must be my coupling/matching circuit
components I think. I am going to measure some caps this week and see
what I used (grin)...

Hi,
I think I speak for most of us when I say you're not the only one. I can't
image anything more exciting than being right in the middle of these events.
Of course we are probably ignoring events around us today that folks in the
future will have wanted to be "in the middle of". I heard a proment "radio
doctor" say yesterday that he regreted never have attended one of Carl
Sagen's lectures when he was in school. Even thought it was outside his
field he said the fact the the classes and lectures were always standing
room only should have told him there was something special going on.

                                                       (o o)

To Bry and anyone else interested,

I have seen a couple of posts regarding the 1TPI.jpg circuit. I think it's
the one I received from someone about 3 months ago and have been emailing
out to anyone who asked. I built one using an old audio amplifier, and
have a ball with it. BEAUTIFUL tone, and a solid 14 watts out (Bird 43)
have thus far netted me 13 states, Canada and Mexico. Glad to hear Steve
Molls version came out well too.

I have made a bunch of cut and try experiments with parts values to optimize
my version for 40m, so if anyone is interested in the circuit .jpg or
my experiences with it, drop me an email and I will send it on to you.

Merry Christmas,

Dave WB7AWK
