Ok Guys, I need some advice again.<GG> I took a trip to the local surplus
store and picked up an old rack mout chassis with a few tube and two
transformers. I check out the transformers for voltages but since there are
no markings of any kind on the body of them how can I guesstimat the current
rating on the secondaries.

The book "Syntony and Spark - The Origins of Radio" by Hugh J. Aitken
was published as a Princeton Paperback in 1985. The 1976 copyright is
by Wiley. The paperback ISBN is 0-691-02392-1. Got mine at the
Smithsonian book shop more than 5 years ago.

The subtitle "The Origins of Radio" refers to the beginning of 'syntony'
or tuned circuits to confine the wide splatter of spark to allow more
stations on the air, and the effect that had on the Marconi Company.
You also learn that wireless wasn't just a gimmick, it was essential
for communication with ships, both for trade and for war. Great stuff.

Um, if I could speak turn-of-the-century German and had immunity to the
diseases of Europe then, I'd love to have heard Hertz develop the math
laid out by Maxwell. Wonder what prerequisites that course had.

Best wishes for the holidays,
Bill Hawkins

I just had a most enjoyable QSO with W1YT up in N.H. on 7050 kHz
Both of us were running crystal control. He with 5 watts - me with
four! (I am in Maryland) - Ed was using a Drake 2-B receiver.

Good signals were obtained in both directions RST 569 or so, and a
very solid QSO ensued. Unfortunately he had to go to lunch, bu it was
great to work another glowbug like that!

I just heard AA4DA call a brief CQ but couldn't get him to hear me.
He was on about 7049.8 and I was on 7050 so maybe that is why.

His signal was very weak here.

SOMEONE keeps testing an occasional BEEP with a VERY strong signal.
Anyone else around today???

Hi Bob and the gang...I have been fairly successful at just micing the
wire size with a small micrometer, and then using the Wire table to try
and get an idea of the current rating of the winding. I use the 750
circular mils per amp chart, as we amateurs can operate things in the
ICAS mode, and dont have to be concerned with continuous duty ratings.
The windings are color coded sometimes...and that'll give you an idea
of where to start. In the case of tape wound windings, I generally
mic the thickness and then multiply that figure times a guesstimate of
the number of times that figure would go into the width, and then seek
out a resonable comparison of wiresize...in circular mils from the
chart.

I hope that helps Bob...and dosent confuse.

>From the Toronto Globe and Mail (12/24/96)

At 9:00PM on Christmas Eve, 1906, a dozen or so wireless-radio operators in the
Caribbean began to hear faint, ghostly music. One said to his shipmates,
"Listen, I hear an angel's voice on the microphone, and music and singing
too." But it wasn't an
angel. It was Canadian-born inventor Reginald Aubrey Fessenden, called by
some the Father of Radio.

A Few Notes:

The first broadcast was sponsored by the United Fruit Company

Mr. Fenssenden was the first radio anouncer, disk jock (playing edison
cylinders), and
musician (playing a violin and singing).

The first recording ever broadcast on that night was Handel's Largo.

The location of the transmitter was Brant Rock, Mass.

Mr. Fessenden had worked for Tom Edison, who told him that wireless speach
was about as likely as "a man jumping over the moon).

Mr. Fessenden promoted wave theory of radio tranmission (Marconi belived
that radio waves traveled like a whiplash in one direction) where in water
ripple like motion they moved out from the antenna.

Mr. Fessenden's first voice transmission took place (one way) in 1900. The
message was;
"Is it snowing where you are Mr. Thiessen?"

Many of the ideas of Mr.Fessenden were used without his consent during the
first world war. He was compensated by the U.S. Radio trust in 1928 for this
with a payment of
$2.5 million dollars.

Mr. Fessenden patented more than 500 inventions, including SONAR, the tracer
bullet and the hetrodyne transmitter.

-----
So with that though of those strange and unexpected sounds comming through
the headphones many years ago, we ponder what new and exciting inventions
and ideas will emerge in 1997 and beyond.

May you all have a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year !

73's for now

And yet the Kentuckians will tell you Nathan Stubblefield invented
radio, while others will claim Tesla, Marconi DeForrest etc.

I think each country has their local hero that they claim invented
radio or transmitted first.

I have been told that the earliest "broadcasts" of radio occurred
long before the CLAIMED first BC station went on te air - viz., that
there were numerous preachers around the hills of S.E. Tennessee and
Western Virginia that used simple transmitting apparatus well before
the first commercial broadcaster (was it KDKA?) hit the airwaves.

Much of Nikolai Tesla's earlier work was burned up and destroyed and he died
peniless, even though he likely invented radio long before others
came along later and "invented" it.

I have never heard of a "hetrodyne transmitter" - not sure what that
was. Obviously a term that didn't stick. I thought Marconi deserved
much of the credit for actually developing radio as we know it today.

I found the descriptions of this guy's work and inventions very
interesting because I have never heard of him before (I am no expert
on this as you can tell!)

Merry Xmas

On this day in 1906, sailing out of New York towards Rotterdam
was the freighter West Selene. The wireless op on board was a
fellow by the name of Henry Jacobson. Barely 200 miles off the
United States' New England coast, on this cold wintery night, he
heard over his wireless station a most unusual sound. He heard
what was then, for the first time, music and then the voice of a
fellow man being transmitted over the airwaves. Next was heard a
violin playing softly followed by a song of Christmas, Silent Night.
Ships far out at sea tuned in that Christmas Eve to listen and marvel
at this new form of communication. It was still the era of spark
gap transmitters.

So, on this day, 95 years ago, a Canadian citizen by the name of
Reginald Fessenden did invent and put into service the first true
radio transmitter. The apparatus was a dampened spark gap generator
of his own design and specification, built in America. The station,
with it's towering antenna, was assembled at Brant Rock, Massachusetts,
about 30 miles up the beach from Boston. Still, another fifeteen
years passed before radio once again became a public medium. But
for a few souls sailing amongst the sea of humanity there was a
Christmas miracle that night on December 24, 1906. It was the
miracle of radio, with Christmas wishes....and a song, Silent Night.

May you each enjoy your own miracle of Christmas. As we sail this
journey, may you all sleep in heavenly peace this night.

Marconi assembled various existing components into the
wireless. The parts were already there and he put the
pieces of the puzzle together to make the wireless...which
is not radio. And Marconi gave due credit to those whose
work he was able to use. What Marconi did do that he could
claim was his discovery was to debunk the scholarly theory
of that time. The academics had convinced themselves that
radio waves were either absorbed or passed directly through
the atmosphere....the ether. Marconi proved them wrong thusly
advancing radio science to a new level. He also developed the
technique of heterodyne, to use a lesser frequency to control
a much higher frequency.

Would like to ramble on but I gotta catch a bus in a few minutes.
Quickly, Reginald Fessenden is most likely the true father of
radio although Lee deForest is also considered the father of radio
for inventing the vacuum tube. Niether do we pay enough tribute to
Fleming, an Englishman, who invented the diode valve prior to
deForest's vacuum tube. Could be wrong about the name Fleming but
I believe he's the one.

73 and hey...read up on some of this history...it's fun and educational!

Tnx for the great story, Joe.

Early radio is an area of study of mine. After several years of research I have concluded that no one person "invented" radio, but rather it was a
select group of visionaries and amateur scientists who experimented and
traded information (and law suits) that made radio what it is today.

One other "forgotten" early radio experimenter was Fr. Joseph Murgas
(pronounced Mur Gosh) who, around 1905, was transmitting radio messages between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton, Pa at 50 wpm + using his "Murgas
Code". I live about 3 miles from the Slovak Catholic church where Fr. Murgas ministered and experimented in early radio transmission. Marconi
visited his lab several times and, in the end, was granted use of his patents, after Murgas' health faltered.

W3SZ, now a silent key, was a very young lad at the time and actually met
Marconi on one visit to Fr. Murgas' lab. Recently a 25 minute documentary
about Fr. Murgas was filmed and aired over the local PBS outlet, WVIA.
The opening was attended by a host of dignataries including our
ambassador to Slovakia and the Slovak ambassador to the US. If you are
interested I do have a copy of this tape that aired about 4 weeks ago
and I will make a copy and send it to you.

Hi Folks,

Here's some data on the meter that I need. The original one was 3ma full
scale but calibrated for 8ma. The R=500 ohms. Original was Heath square
plastic but will work with anything at this point. QSL via private post
if you have a suitable meter surplus to your needs.

Also looking for some RF decking to build up as amplifier for a Central
Electronics 20A that I have acquired from Ron Follmar in Kerrville. I'm
going to use the 20A with the 51J4 that I am resurrecting. Boy, what a
project !

Merry Christmas, Doug

Terry, you will have to ask around in some of the musicians'
newsgroups. They can tell you for sure.

U liked the slightly larger amps like the Super Pro and the more
poular Pro Reverb as well as the Tremolux and the Concert.

It was amazing how much audio they could squeeze out of a couple of
6V6es!

Actually no, hams go on DXpeditions to WYoming and Montana these
days!

Back in May, I got AA6MR/m in Wyoming on the County Huumters Net on
14336 kHz.

But you ar eright - it seems like there are no hams left out there
these days. When was the last time anyone heard Idaho or Nevada
even?!

We get TOO MANY stations from AZ, CA, NM and Washington State.

Hey Brian,

This looks like a vacation plan for someone. Of course we'd probably all
end up there at once and there wouldn't be anyone to talk anywhere else.

Gee, No problem working California from here in Idaho! Worked
a nice gentleman near LA last night on 75 AM with the DX-100B and
75A-4 station. Haven't had a chance to listen for the glowbug
net lately, but as a rule you are all gone by the time I get a
chance to get on the radio.

Noticed a book on only Fender amps in the Prentice Hall bookstore
while doing last minute shopping today - very small book compared
to something like the Moore or Dachis books on short wave receivers.
No pirce index in it.

I have a 3711 kc xtal (FT holder) made by Petersen Radio Co., and a
larger military xtal at 7600 kc (only markings are CR-1A/AR SICG),
that I'd like to trade for a 20m xtal near 14040 kc (any type holder).
I'm building my first 20m rig (I've had success with 160, 80, 40, and 30m
xmtrs, so got to keep moving up!).

By the way Dave & everyone - I have tidied up that schematic a bit
and I will send it to Mr. Calleiro N6EV for display on the WWW site!
That way everyone can see Dave's photos and the schematic of his rig
without having to get it by e-mail.

ALSO guys, note that this desig has coil-winding details for several
bands which is nice

I am not sure WHY it was called 1tpg.jpg ???

Also, it has to be one of the WORST looking scans I have ever seen!
I worked on it for about and hour to try to get it looking tidy and
legible! I hope you like the results. Tell me if I made any errors
please! So much of it was hard to decipher!
