This sounds wonderful. I wonder if some of our more ingenious
glowbug/machinists could make something like this today!
I think it could become a VERY popular item for folks homebrewing
antenna tuners and maybe it could even be used in a pi-network for
all band tuning, with a turns-counter dial.

Yeah - I don't think there is really much of any difference needed in
the core material. A coil is a coil. A core is a core. The
permeability will make some difference in the inductance of course,
but with such power supplies, they are very forgiving if you vary the
amount of capacitance or inductance used. More is almost always
better of course(!)

Happy New Year All!
The traffic on the list has been a bit slack lately ... I hope it is because
everyone is busy turning out projects! There have been a few e-mail glitches
too with more than half the list showing up as undeliverable addresses, so
some of you might have lost the few messages that have been sent.

Hi Brian and the bunch....yes, it's been a while since the traffic
flowed from the 'Bugs' server...good to see things moving again.

As for the Vari Coil...take a look inside an ART-13 at the "Vari-
Ometer" as it's called. It was the same idea...just on a bit different
frame. It worked pretty well and could match about any wire antenna
(hi impedence). The trouble with using a variable coil/inductor in
a pi-net output is the possibility of a match that dosent have
sufficient "Q" to attenuate harmonics...which is one of the jobs a
well designed pi-net must do. Just because we can achive a form of
resonance through that network dosent necessarily also mean we've done
a good job of keeping the harmonics bottled up in the rig. This
relationship becomes ever more important when we use the network on
small, one or two stage rigs that multiply the fundamental frequencies
up close to the final stage, with the result being radiation of harmonic
frequencies in places we dont really want them to be....i.e....the
antenna.

So...the "Vari-Coil" had some of those same problems, and I think there
was insufficient demand for it also. It'd be wonderful to design a
truly "universal" output network that would be all things to all rigs,
but without switched inductors...difficult to do, when one takes into
consideration the need for a resonable "Q" factor.

Just a thought.....take care and enjoy the New Year....one and all.

Here's a good story guys:

It was 1951, just starting High School in the Big Apple. Lots
of us kids had to travel far (the High School was not a
neighborhood school) so we were encouraged to engage in
"extracurricular activities". My! How the world has changed.
Since it was an all boy school you might think nasty thoughts
about the "extracurricular activities", but in those simpler
days it just meant basketball, the photography club (I tried
it, didn't like it), the debating club, .... AND the Radio
Club, W2FYB, organized by Father Albert T. Rooney, S.J. Of
course the extracurricular activities began after the last
class -- perhaps about 3:30 in the afternoon.

I can still remember thinking (when I was about 10 years old)
how the radio came in from the wires in the wall. Father
Rooney held the first radio club meeting in the Physics lab.
(He was the Physics teacher at the high school.) It was
standing room only! But, the word was out: Morse code. A great
winnower. Pretty soon we were down to perhaps 12 -- now we
could all fit into the Radio Club, a smallish room adjoining
Father Rooney's physics lab. His Collins 75A1 and Jonhson
Viking II with outboard VFO were AWESOME. Getting all those
"dips" looked like black magic.

1951 -- and "radio row" in New York City was doing just fine:
Arrow, Newark, Harvey, and I can't recall them all -- but it
really was a ROW of shops down on Barclay street. I used to
take the ferry home sometimes just so I could browse thru the
"row".

Well, Father Rooney whipped us into shape pretty good. Don't
have the statistics, but over the four years that i was in
school we had perhaps 15 boys get their licenses. Maybe my
estimate is a little low.

1952 -- we would go down to the "row" occasionally with Father
Rooney, who was trying to get us to "build" stuff. The WW-II
military surplus was there: big time! Father got us to
"convert" BC 455's for receivers, and BC 696 (?)'s for
transmitters. (The number is probably wrong: he counselled us
to get on 40 meters.... good advice for a city dweller, at
least as compared to 80 meters.)

Father Rooney got us to go for our novice tickets, just as a
morale booster -- he said "Don't operate as a novice; get your
general first." We did. George, KN2ADD went down to the
federal building (with a few others) and they got calls all
close together. I was sick that day, and went about a week
later, snagging KN2AJV. It was in December, '51.

Father Rooney had a war-surplus morse code sending machine. It
used paper tape, marked with ink, and the tape was led over a
photoelectric tube; this was the "switch" that keyed the code.
I recall the loudspeaker on the code generator was a small
affair, but it had a mechanical screw-like thing that you could
adjust and get that speaker to resonate like crazy. I always
wanted to experiment with resonant speakers, but never got
around to it.

Well, by September of 1952 George, I and others took our
general exams, at the same federal building on Varrick street.
Father Rooney actually did most of the conversion work, but we
were very interested "assistants".

I cannot forget my first experiences on the air -- I was so
self conscious -- all the hams knew me for what I was, because
they all kept addressing me this way: " So lid ...." How did
they *know* I was a lid? Gradually, we became more expert, and
by the time we graduated a number of us were "extras" (a new
fangled thing that the FCC had just come up with).

Those were the days! Father Rooney, God love you!

His full catalog is there.

Dan's wonderful--with the caveat for this list that he is NOT a glowbug

circuits of any persuasion.

I buy a lot of my solid state stuff from him.

Never had an Ocean Hopper, but I did get a Star Roamer for Christmas
when I was about 12 (when I say "get" what I mean is "begged for day
and night"!). Got it together and it didn't work, so I took it to the
local TV repair shop and they fixed it for $4.50. Only two problems:
I had soldered both the oscillator and input circuits to the same gang
of the tuning cap (on opposite sides), and a shielded lead had been up
against a terminal when I soldered it, melting the insulation and
shorting the terminal. Amazing that I remember that so well...

Had a lot of fun with that radio. Built a 6AU6 BFO so I could hear SSB
and CW -- tuning in SSB was like magic! Spent a lot of time on the
roof and in trees putting up antennas that weren't strong enough.
Finally (kick, kick!) I took it apart so I could use the parts in other
projects. Still have many of them, like the variable cap, coils and IF
transformers, so parts of it may still help jiggle the aether in the
future.

One other thing Dan's has that applies to glowbugging is/are variable
caps. He's got some very nice dual section 20pF caps for only $2.50
each. These have easily removable (and replaceable) plates so you you
could come up with anything from almost 0 to 40pF fully closed (I guess
I should use uuF on this list, right?). After I got a couple I ordered
4 more just because they seemed so useful.

Howdy, hope everyone had a great Christmas!
Thought I'd tell you all about a Christmas present I got for my
father. It as the one tube regn receiver kit from AES. My father was a ham
back in the late 30's and then again starting in the 60's. Well, he worked
on it for a couple of days, between naps, eating and "discussions".
Finally, after the usual switching the tickler coil leads and adding a
ground lead here and there, it perked right up, catching the local AM
station with resounding audio. He was like a kid in a toy store! Great
little kit! Now he's talking about winding other coils for it.

Guys - it has been a great day for glowbugging! I didn't get much
done in fact.
I fired up the Geloso 4/104 VFO and gave it about 45 minutes to warm
up. It STILL drifted somewhat! Heck I am only runing 105V or so to it!

I get 3 watts on 40m - not bad. The 6AG7 and 6L6 neeed more plate
voltage AND drive, but QRP is fun!

I worked K3WWP who was using a 6Y6 glowbug GREAT!

I also got a good report from K1HXA in N.H. - so by the time I ever
get this stuff organized... (Right now it is a mess with three
chassis spread all over a desk! - clip leads everywhere, and I have
to flip two switches to go to xmit!) But having great fun with it!

Hey your tale brings backmany memories.
I was in high school in the late 40's and we also had a radio club.
The high school was also all boys( Lane tech) in Chicago. Our
receivers were old arc-5 single banders that the science teacher also
a ham, had picked up somewhere.

The xmitter was a tube type 6k7 osc. pushing a 6L6 buffer driving pair
of 12 volt 807's think they were 1625's or something like that. We
used AM screen modulation and fed a long long long long long wire;(
about 6 wavelengths on 20 meters. darn thing ran half way across the
school roof. had a varcoil type of antenna matcher, and also a
harmonic filter, that had to be reset for each band, but we sure got
out. I graduated in 51 and went right into avaition navy radio school
in Millington tenn.and from there into a flying boat squadron PBM'S as
a radio man. The old boys sending at 20-30 wpm on mss fox militaey
had quite a swing to there fists and took awhile to get familiar with.
Left the navy and went with the FAA for 20 more years into micrwave
and radar displays. Boy some memories, had not thought about those
days in years.

Since my stroke awhile back am relearning the code and will be back on
the air soon. Used to be w4kcj and kp4bqp when over seas in PR. Have
a happy new year it sure was good reading your post. Thank the good
LORD for all that you have!!!

Yes Mike, but that should be "variable condensers" and those are
"Mickey Mikes" when you say uuF, he he!

Gang:

Don't know if anyone out there collects the Radio Boys books by Allan
Chapman, but I have seven titles (5 by Chapman and 2 by Brekenridge) and
an 8th book "The Golden Boys Rescue by Radio" by Wyman.

If anyone is interested in all 8 books, e-mail me and we'll discuss.
Looking for an original Halli S-38 (6 tube model), HR-10B Heathkit
receiver, HG-10 VFO, HD1410 keyer, and Knightkit T-60 TX. Maybe we can
work a trade.

I haven't seen anyone talking about Straight Key Night, so just a
reminder, don't forget this extremely fun non-contest on New Year's
Eve. (Of course, for those of us who only use straight keys daily, it
will be like any other night!)

List traffic? Lets see, I belong to 7 or 8 E-mail lists and get about 60
messages per day. Every list goes up & down in posting volume so I'm quite
used to it. But then I read more than I post to any of them.

SKN? Heck, I wouldn't miss it, Jacqueline! Say, everyone if you are
NEW to Straight Key Night, remember instead of giving someone their
"RST" ya give 'em their "SKN"

Got it? OK! See ya there!

BTW - does anyone know what time the activity officially starts?
I would like to mostly do it in the daytime when QRP contacts are
easiest on 40m !!

Happy New Year to all you Glow Buggists!

I'll do my bit to change that .... I would like to know your
favorite 40 (or 80 or 20) meter QRP xcvr: couple of watts --
maybe up to 5w. -- gosh I'm *really* looking for solid state
here (back-packable) -- hope this doesn't offend anyone (I only
want the *glow* to be on my face). But I would love to latch
on to a Viking II with outboard VFO, and a Collins 75A1 (or
75A2) for a fixed (club) station.

Gonna reconstruct Father Rooney's radio club!

Also, any advice on how to apply to become a volunteer examiner?

And YES! , Happy New year, all!
