Bry,

I had one of these as a Novice and HATED it! I would wonder what other folks
felt about this bit O'Bad Glowbuggin. YIKES! No AGC, no audio gain control,
and on my version, the mic was wired in permanently (handheld). Later versions
offered it detached.

Of course, for a CW novice rig, it was just a bad choice. Great mobile rig if
I had had a driver's license <g>

Any opinions?

Great deal, tho - gotta admit I almost bought it!

Hello to all of the glowbuggers!

Is anybody out there familiar with the "screwdriver" test as a method of
finding hum in a tube receiver? From what I have heard, you poke the
screwdriver around the power supply, and when the screwdriver is magnetized
to a particular part, there is your hum source. Does this have any basis in
reality, or is it one of those stories like "Change the SWR of your antenna
by varying the length of the feed line"?

Thanks for the advice,
Adam

Hi gang, (read through - questions at end!!)

It's been a while since I've sent an update, so here it is. Some of you may
recall some time back I announced my grand project of building a complete
glowbug shack in old Heath SB-series boxes using designs from the '63 and '67
handbook. The transmitter will be the '4-Band 50 Watter' modified to cover
160-15 meters with internal VFO. The Receiver is the 'SuperSimpleX Mark II'
from the '63 book (and others). Uses 3 tubes (ok, 6 sections!) and has
a regenerative detector. There will also be a single 811 GG amplifier
('67 handbook) for 200 watts or so. And lastly, in an SB-610 box, a station
console with 1 tube keyer, TR switch, and speaker. Granted - a modest setup,
especially weak in the receiver department. But if I don't start simple, I'll
never get anything built (how many of us have been THERE?). If all goes as
planned, I'll build a much more advance receiver later.

So now the update: (and a couple questions)

I have all of the SB-boxes.

Ok, ok, there's more. I have just started the chassis
work on the receiver and have the major components mounted. I'm using a
National
SCN tuning dial (YIKES what a pain to mount - had to extend the faceplace out
3/4" from the chassis on standoffs to get enough clearance. I couldn't mount
the main tuning cap on top of the chassis and still get all of the SCN dial on
the faceplate). But yowsers does it look COOL! Lust like Lew McCoy W1ICP!
After
all of the parts are located and holes drilled and tested, the whole thing will
be painted Collins two-tone grey with baked enamel.

I have manufactured a new face panel using 1/8" aluminum sheet stock, and the
same for the chassis, which is made from sheet aluminum and angle stock to form
a very solid, stiff chassis. Fits the case like a glove (right, OJ?).

I am taking a good deal of time on each step, since I have never built a
receiver
before and want this one to work and be useable. But it's coming along nicely.
I have to divide my time between this and remodeling the kitchen. Of course,
that's when I'm not helping with my 6 year old and 2 year old kids!

A couple of questions:

Is there someone in the group who has built tube receivers (that worked <g>) and
also has a copy of the SuperSimpleX Mark II that I could impose upon for
'mentoring' (pick your buzzword) help? I have some very specific questions
about some of the parts I am using, and the ways I am using them and it would
sure help if some one could look at the schematic and offer suggestions. I can
also FAX or mail a copy to a seasoned receiver-builder if that would work.

Second question: I have chosen for the main tuning capacitor a Hammarlund 35pf
variable that is NOS (really pretty!). That is the value given in the project,
but I am wondering about the plate spacing. Mine is spaced like you would find
in a linear or other high-voltage situation where arc-over is a concern. Is
there anything wrong with using it here? I don't see where there would be, but
before I bolt the SCN dial down, I need to know exactly which cap it will hook
to.

Third question: The plan calls for shielded slug-tuned coils. I have some VERY
high quality coils, but they aren't in shielded cans. I was going to gut some
old IF cans and mount them in there. Will this give me problems?

Ok - back to kids, kitchen, and radios - in that order!

Hi Dave - well, the thing I CAN tell you for sure is that wide-spaced
35 pF variable will work just fine for receiving. there is no reason
in the world to not use that. I have a VFO here that someone
made usinga similar kind of cap and I know they will do fine for
receiving purposes.

The rest I will have to leave for the receiver glowbug types here!

Hi everyone,
The mail server is having growing pains and several posts are not making it
to the list. I have tried posting this before, but my posts bounce too.
I talked to Phil and he is working on the problem.
If you post and it does not appear, post it again .. and again.... and again
.. until it finally makes it.
